Florida has a new island
A 1921 hurricane chopped Captiva Island's northern end to create North Captiva, an exclusive, secluded community. Charley followed suit more than 80 years later.
North Captiva is now sliced in two. The new island is a small section of the island without homes on North Captiva's southern end. Sand plumes spread below the water where the storm's waters divided and stranded North Captiva's northern luxurious homes, where Charley chomped roofs off most homes. Waves ripple over the covered sand that used to be above water as the Gulf gets used to its new flow. Category 4 and 5 hurricanes can make major changes to the geography of coastal areas. Ah, well...it keeps the map makers and Rand-McNally on their toes!

A Category 4 hurricane is nature's way of making you fill out a change-of-address form.
