Default Robert,

I said that oath on the Same Day in Portland, Oregon in 1967. We went in on the same day. Then a bus ride to Ft. Lewis, WA for Basic.

Oakland, CA, Induction Center. After the oath, they had all the draftees [I enlisted] line up and count off by threes. Told all of the twos to step forward and told them they were now in the Marine Corps. Could see the color drain from some of their faces. Then a bus ride to Ft. Ord for Basic Training for us Army guys.

I was still in Newark in 67’ when the riots happened but in the 1st Ward Tony Imperiale started his “vigilantes” and patrolled the neighborhoods and also there was big Mafia presence in the 1st Ward and that was a big deterrent to trouble makers.

Actually I was inducted the day MLK was killed and the Army was real worried about what might happen on post. But nothing did at Dix or in Newark
