HELP! I need a computer Guru!!
I'm running Windows XP (Home) and my D drive is an internal CD-RW drive.
Is there a way to tell this drive NOT to automatically start reading a CD when I put in in the drive? Reason is, I'm trying to rescue files from a bad CD-R disc. But when I put the bad CD in the drive the drive tries to read it and starts going nuts, cycling at different speeds and locking up programs and won't let me open the rescue program. Thanks in advance!

No Guru and just guessin' but if'n it were me I would forget the rescuse effort if you know the CD is bad before you mess up the drive...
Maybe someone else has a better idea.. Just wait for it though....

Easiest way to do it is to download TWEAKUI for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp Once you've installed TweakUI, you'll find a lot of options in it. For the current problem, in TweakUI expand My Computer, and then AutoPlay. Click on Drives, and uncheck the drive letter that you no longer want to AutoPlay. Click on Apply, and that's it. Another thing you can try to stop Windows from automatically playing a music CD is holding the SHIFT key down while inserting a CD in the player. |

Well, ummm....
David, none of that stuff worked. Tried holding the SHIFT key down, and I DL'd the tweak tool and it operates just as you said. The drive still tries to read the CD-R disk. I thankya for your help, though!
The files on the disk are not critical or anything, just highly desireable to keep. So, if no one has any more suggestions, I guess I'll just keep the disc and maybe somewhere down the road I can "rescue" the files.
