Downing Street Memo: CNN Turns Facts Into Fiction

Help! Isn't it bad enough that the U.S. press has bungled the story of the Downing Street Memo? I mean, the estimable Walter Pincus of the Washington Post is just now digging into the details of the juicy story that Michael Smith of the Times of London broke on the weekend of May 1.

But this evening, here's CNN Headline News saying that the Downing Street Memo "suggests that the Bush administration saw the Iraq war as inevitable ?"

Jesus wept.

Yeah, like Hitler saying that his invasion of Poland was inevitable.

Whoever did the rip-and-read at CNN stopped reading the memo at least a sentence too soon. Here's the relevant passage from the Downing Street Memo:

" ? Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. ? "
It was the "military action" that "was now seen as inevitable." Who did this "seeing"? Not the Bush administration. Memo to CNN reader of Downing Street Memo: The sentence following is "Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD."

Get it? The point of the Downing Street Memo is not that the Bush regime "saw the war as inevitable." The point is that it wanted the war and had decided that military action was going to happen?and then figure out the justification.

Last January, after Jon Klein took over CNN's U.S. operations, he vowed that CNN would do a lot more "storytelling."

That seems to be working out.

Colmurph.....I guess it's not crap when it comes straight out of the mouth of CNN and slightly edited because of political correctness and media control? I wish I could post warm fuzzies so everybody would not feel threatened, but the truth of the matter is we are in a war predicated on intelligence fixed by company policy and once again our young men and women are faced with commanders with there heads up their butts obviously not having learned anything from the mistakes of Vietnam and paying a heavy price. Officially we never went into the DMZ or Laos but you and I know better. The ticket punchers wanted body counts and we had to do the dirty work. I humped an 80lb ruck with 2 claymores and clackers, 5 frags, 2 bandoliers of 17-18 round clips plus a double clip taped for quick change during the initial part of the fire fight locked and loaded, 2 claymore bags full of bandages, my sewing and probing kit, 2qt canteen, poncho, poncho liner, LRRPs for a week, sometimes a battery for the RTO, 3 Liter glass bottles of ringers lactate and IV kits, morphine and more bandages in my Ruck and any thing else we needed for the particular mission. I humped my fair share of the boonies and understand the mentality it takes to want to stay alive and make DEROS. I would do anything for the guys on my team and vice versa. Sorry you feel the way you do but Patriots don't always have to be yes men and follow the crowd just to feel Patriotic. I want our troops home and I want see both Democrats and Republicans held responsible for their part in this charade. Thanks for your encouragement.
