'Ruben vs. Katja' comes to Lakenheath

The popular local business near Lakenheath village will feature in a forthcoming episode of “Ruben vs. Katja,” one of Holland’s top prime time TV shows. Katja Schuurman may not be an instantly recognizable name here in the U.K., but in her native Holland the former soap actress, pop singer, model and MTV VJ is one of the country’s biggest celebrities. In the episode to be filmed at the auction centre, Katja will attempt to outwit her opponent, comedian Ruben Nicolai, in a “Bargain Hunt” style challenge where both celebrity contestants must quickly learn how to value and buy antique and collectible items before picking up the gavel and auctioning them off in a live sale. The contestant with the highest hammer price wins the glory. On hand to offer expert advice will be Eriswell Hall Barns’ resident auctioneer, David Palmer, who is also a familiar face on BBC antique shows “Flog It!” and “Cash in the Attic.” Known for his colourful wit and flamboyant waistcoats, Mr. Palmer said, “I thought about wearing bright orange, in honour of our friends from the Netherlands, but as the series will be filmed in eight European countries, I shall probably represent the U.K. by sporting the Union Jack with pride.” The auction centre, located on Elveden Estate, is no stranger to being in the spotlight. “One year we auctioned 100 classic cars, which were discovered by accident in another barn nearby. Channel 5’s motoring programme ‘Fifth Gear’ came along to film it,” said Michael Almond, director of Eriswell Hall Barns. “We occasionally get enquiries from production companies looking for new locations but this will certainly be something different.” Chris Mizsak is a freelance writer based in Suffolk, England.
