SECOND INDOCHINA WAR:
September 1964 (Year of the Dragon [Giap Thin]) (US Advisory): This month, 46 South Vietnamese government officials and 132 other South Vietnamese have been killed by the Viet Cong. 144 officials and 778 other South Vietnamese have been kidnapped. There have been 118 attacks, 1938 acts of terrorism, 482 incidents of sabotage and 178 forced propaganda sessions by the VC.

September 1964 (Year of the Dragon [Giap Thin]) (US Advisory): By the end of the month, there are five B and forty-four A Special Forces detachments in Vietnam, of which one B and three A detachments are assigned to special projects, plus a signal element and twenty-man psychological operations and civic action augmentation unit.

September 30, 1964 1964 (Year of the Dragon [Giap Thin]) (US Advisory): Ambassador Taylor submits his first report to LBJ on the military situation and the pacification program in South Vietnam.

September 30, 1966 (Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive Phase II): In Operation Paul Bunyan, engineer units equipped with Rome Plows clear the jungle around base camps and along main supply routes.

September 30, 1966 (Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive Phase II): 1 ATF starts Operation 12/66, Crow's Nest, a battalion search-and-clear operation dealing with nine objective areas within the 24 square km of AO Joan in Phuoc Tuy Province, 12 km north of the 1 ATF base, in undulating terrain with mainly rubber plantations, jungle, and grassland. VC forces are possible dispersed companies of 274 Main Force Regiment, as well as parties of village guerrillas. Results: 1 Australian KIA, 5 VC prisoners, and six tonnes of rice destroyed.

September 30, 1967 (Year of the Goat [Dinh Mui]) (US Counteroffensive Phase III): 7 RAR starts Operation Kenmore.

September 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): The 135th AHC operated throughout III Corps during the month. Many operations, however, were with the 9th Infantry Division in the III Corps portion of the Mekong Delta.

September 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): The SAS mounted 15 recon patrols and five ambush patrols during the month, and conducted Operation Overboard on the Song Ria, with little result.

September 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): B/7/17th Cavalry operations during September from An Khe.

September 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than])(US Counteroffensive Phase V): 326 Med 101st Airborne completes its first month of operation as an Air Ambulance Platoon.

September 30, 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than])(US Counteroffensive Phase V): The Starblazers help the 40th ARVN Regiment as it fights an enemy force of unknown size near Bong Son.

September 30, 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): The USS New Jersey, the last battleship of the US Navy to see action, arrives off the Vietnamese coast. Between now and March 1969, she will fire 3615 16 inch shells and nearly 11,000 5 inch shells in bombardment missions off North Vietnam.

September 30, 1969 (Year of the Rooster [Ky Dau]) (US Summer-Fall 1969): The US and Thai governments announce a planned withdrawal of 6000 Americans, mostly airmen, from Thailand.

September 30, 1971 (Year of the Boar [Tan Hoi]) (US Consolidation I): The Australians withdraw all 1 Armed Regiment Centurion Tanks from Vietnam.

September 1971 (Year of the Boar [Tan Hoi]) (US Consolidation I): Late in the month President Nixon orders heavy strikes by some 250 aircraft against a Communist concentration north of the DMZ in order to forestall an enemy push through that buffer area.

September 30, 1972 (Year of the Rat [Nham Ty]) (US Cease-Fire): Nguyen Hue/Easter Offensive: In Thua Thien Province, the ARVN Airborne Division again launches attacks to reoccupy FSB Barbara and FSB Anne. They are met with fierce enemy resistance and slowed not only by heavy enemy artillery barrages but also by drenching monsoon rains.

64 I was in Da Nang and 66 I was a member of the Tonkin Gulf Club once again. Oh well time does fly.
