When I visited Scotland several years ago our tour guide told us the same story about the name for "golf". When a fellow tourist pointed out to him that the original spelling of "golf" ended in an "e", the guide said it stood for "Gentlemen Only - Ladies Forbidden, Everywhere". I've since learned that "golf" is gaelic for club.
