Alameda County supes oppose parts of USA Patriot Act

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors this week passed a resolution demanding Congress repeal sections of the USA Patriot Act and other laws its members feel "violate fundamental rights and liberties enumerated in the U.S. Constitution.''

With that resolution, the county board joined more than 250 other public agencies nationwide that have taken formal stands against the Patriot Act, a series of investigative measures designed to help law enforcement in the war on terrorism.

"The Patriot Act is too broad in its scope and compromises too many of our rights in the name of national security,'' said Supervisor Nate Miley, who sponsored the resolution.

The board resolution was opposed by Mark Zanides, an assistant U.S. attorney in Oakland who said it contained inaccuracies in its descriptions of the Patriot Act.

"It's factually incorrect,'' Zanides told the board.
