Default Timeline, October 7th

FIRST INDOCHINA WAR:
October 7, 1947 (Year of the Boar [Dinh Hoi]): Operation Lea begins, a series of attacks on Viet Minh positions in the north near the Chinese border. The Viet Minh will suffer 9000 casualties between now and December 22, but the remainder of the 40,000 troops will slip through French lines.

SECOND INDOCHINA WAR:
October 1962 (Year of the Tiger [Nham Dan]) (US Advisory): Although required by a new Geneva Agreement to withdraw its combat forces from Laos this month, an estimated 9000 NVA troops remain in country and Hanoi will gradually increase the North Vietnamese combat presence in Laos through the mid-1960s.

October 7, 1964 (Year of the Dragon [Giap Thin]) (US Advisory): Advisory Group Technician Major Dean Gosney, on learning that a battalion of the 5th ARVN Division has been ambushed, volunteers to direct a team of armed helicopters in relief. After conducting repeated, effective strikes against the enemy, Major Gosney's aircraft is shot down and he and four crew members are killed. Before coming to Vietnam, Major Gosney had been a infantry officer at a service weapons test team in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he earned the Legion of Merit for his work in developing the M-16 rifle. The major is posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the US advisory compound at Phu Lai is named after him.

October 1964 (Year of the Dragon [Giap Thin]) (US Advisory): The status of Special Forces CIDG camps and ethnic composition of the troops is noted.

October 7, 1965 (Year of the Snake [At Ti]) (US Defense): The "light ship" at A/2/20 ARA's base at An Khe proves its worth.

October 7, 1966 (Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive Phase II): Operation Searchlight begins in the Phan Thiet area of Binh Thuan Province.

October 1966 (Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive Phase II): Enemy forces appear in strength around the CIDG camp at Plei Djereng, and elements of the US 4th Infantry and 1st Cavalry Divisions rapidly reinforce the camp, making contact with the enemy in several firefights throughout October and November.

October 7, 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): Operation Logan Field begins northeast of Quang Tri City.

October 1971 (Year of the Boar [Tan Hoi]) (US Consolidation I): ARVN intelligence reports indicate the presence of enemy armor in the areas of Kratie, Dambe and Chup on Cambodia territory near III Corps.

October 7, 1972 (Year of the Rat [Nham Ty]) (US Cease-Fire): Nguyen Hue/Easter Offensive: The NVA launches another attack on Phnom Penh in which 103 commandos from the 367 Sapper Regiment drop a span of the Chhrui Chang War Bridge and destroy seven APCs at the Municipal Stadium. Cambodian forces kill 83 Vietnamese and capture seven more before these Vietnamese can also launch attacks on Phnom Penh's power plant and petroleum facilities.

POSTBELLUM:
October 7, 2000: Sergeant Major Billy Ray Laney, of the 5th Special Forces Group, is laid to rest in Houston, Alabama, by his wife, children and grandchildren. He had arrived in Vietnam in May 1967, having already served four years in the Navy, and was last seen wounded on a hatchet force mission in Laos a month later. The Army told his family he was missing in action, and 11 years later he was declared dead. In August 2000, his widow was told that her husband's remains were among those of several Americans found in Laos; DNA analysis in a special lab in Hawaii had confirmed his identity. Sgt. Maj. Laney was flown to Huntsville, Alabama, on October 5, where local veteran's groups had organized a "Welcome Home to Rest" ceremony at the airport, and then was escorted by state troopers in an honor procession past more than 1000 soldiers and civilians lining roads at nearby Redstone Arsenal to the funeral home, while flags on state buildings throughout Alabama flew at half-mast between October 5 and October 7. Several current members of Sgt. Maj. Laney's group, the 5th Special Forces out of Ft. Campbell, Ky., attend the ceremony on the 7th. One of them, Staff Sgt. Chris Pearson, tells a reporter, "We're here because of guys like that. These men were a special kind of men."
