One Step Closer To Identification, An Update!
ONE STEP CLOSER TO IDENTIFICATION, AN UPDATE!
According to the Fresno Bee (Newspaper), the body of an airman lost for nearly 63 years may be a step closer to identification! The remains of one of four airmen lost on a training flight out of Mather Field (Sacramento) back in 1942, was a young man between 22 and 25 years old (age range of the crew). Found in a glacier on Mt. Mendel at the 14,000? level, dental records were not conclusive, and as such, DNA has been requested of surviving relatives of the airmen in order to expedite identification. The Army Casualty Office, the same organization that my wife stays in touch with for any news on her uncle who expired in a North Korean Prisoner of War Facility (Tiger Camp), is going through the long, drawn out procedure of DNA identification. And once completed, it is hoped that yet another World War II era patriot can be laid to rest with long-overdue honors. After attending a recent family update, in which the Army Casualty Office played a key role, I began to get the idea on how really tough it is to recover and identify the remains of those who never came home! In the many POW camps alone, from our wars since 1941, some 17,000 to 21,000 men (roughly) died in enemy captivity. Many of these brave and forgotten souls are still buried in unknown, unmarked graves, and skilled teams following up leads are constantly searching for them. The man found frozen in that glacier in Kings Canyon National Park is but one of the many thousands of our military men who never returned home. All of these men, however, were never forgotten, and for as long as we as a nation remember, respect, and honor the memory of these missing warriors, we will continue the search! ?NO MAN WILL BE LEFT BEHIND, NOT IF WE CAN HELP IT!? ?We on this site may not always agree, but on this issue, how can any true patriot forget his fallen comrades?? VERITAS
