Well, gentlemen, it has been a long hard fight, but it appears that the Tam will be saved. She will be donated shortly to a group of people in Virginia who will use the Tam as a training forum for sea scouts and NJROTC cadets.
We will be assembling a crew of former coasties and Tam vets very soon. We especially need people who are familiar with the old diesel electric plants. If you are interested in helping out in ANY way at all, please contact me at coastie166@aol.com.

We will be needing all manner of help:

1)Actual physical labor for maintenance.
2)Crewing the cutter for the move to Richmond.
3)Financial donations
4)Guides

For further details on what's been happening see:
www.tamaroa.org
www.tamaroa-zuni@yahoogroups.com

Thanks,

Bill Doherty

Next Saturday, we will be shifting moorings. If you live in the Baltimore/DC area and want to help with line handling be at the Tam (Domino Sugar factory just off I-395)by 8 AM, Saturday the 16th.

We have been told that in about 45 days there MAY be the possibility of moving her to either the CG yard in Baltimore or Richmond.

For Immediate Release Richmond, Virginia -- March 20, 2002 -- The historic vessel Tamaroa/Zuni, whose history stretches from the sands of Iwo Jima to the seas of The Perfect Storm has finally found a homeport. After a seven year odyssey of being decommissioned, parked, abandoned, auctioned off, purchased, and sold again, she is to be donated to the Tamaroa Foundation. The Foundation is a newly formed non-profit organization located in Richmond, Virginia, whose mission is to preserve the ship in an operational condition and to educate the public about the vital role working vessels such as cutters and tugs play in our maritime heritage. She will be used in a number of roles, the primary one being as a maritime educational platform. The Tamaroa will be made available to Sea Cadets, Sea Scouts, NROTC and Junior NROTC programs and others. The Tamaroa will also be accessible to the general public as a National Historic Ship. Tours of the ship, static displays, scheduled live demonstrations will be among the many aspects the public will experience when they visit the Tamaroa. Former crewmembers, their families and those who served on similar ships will be able to relive a part of their youth and share their experiences with others. The Tamaroa Foundation programs will be funded by user fees, donations, grants and volunteer assistance. For more information on the Tamaroa, please visit www.tamaroa.org. SPECIAL NOTICE FROM THE TAMAROA FOUNDATION The Tamaroa is presently moored in Baltimore, Maryland. The Foundation has taken formal custodianship of vessel as of Saturday, March 16, 2002. By May 1, 2002 the Tamaroa must be moved from her present location, either to a temporary location in Baltimore, or all the way to Richmond. More details will be published when they are available. As such, the Foundation is looking for volunteers to help man her during these evolutions. Please note that she is operational. Whether she will be assisted by a tug or go it alone (or in combination thereof) has yet to be determined. For those of you who would like to volunteer there will be an orientation that that must be undertaken before the Tamaroa gets underway We especially need Enginemen and Electricians! Also damage controlmen, boatswain's mates and quartermasters. The owner's interim maintenance and repair people will be available to conduct this training as soon as we are ready. They are only available on weekends. It will be necessary for this orientation to utilize a two-day weekend, especially for the Enginemen. Either April 6-7 or April 20-21, 2002 are the dates set aside for this purpose. Let us know right away, as we have to notify the owners. Beat the bushes guys, we need the help. Regardless of how the ship gets to Richmond, we need to have personnel familiar with all of the ship's systems, especially the engineering and sewage plants. The plan is to videotape, take digital photos, lots of written notes and sketches. Two or three operational teams will be set up get their hands dirty. We will need to write ops instructions. The good news is that we can probably sleep aboard, so bring what you need to be comfortable. There are numerous restaurants close by. In a perfect world we would like to get approximately 30 people (three 10 man teams). There won't be any time for visitors. Please keep a record of your expenses. The Tamaroa Foundation will be a tax-exempt foundation and as such deductible on your income taxes Please contact Harry Jaeger at snafumanor@aol.com for more information or to volunteer. Be sure to include which orientation weekend would be better for you.

Talking Tamaroa is back again

Well ladies and gentlemen, I would call this past weekend of April 20-21, 2002 an unqualified success. About 60 Navy and Coast Guard vets arrived to help start her back up. Long forgotton skills were sharpened, inspections were done and acquaintances renewed. Personally, I was pleased with my era crew mates. 4 of us came down to work on the old girl. The most satisfying part of the weekend was when we got the diesel mains on line and actually turned the screw. It was as if the Tamaroa was waking up after a nine year slumber, rubbing her eyes and seeing all these people on her again. She wants to be useful again.

We all became a bit emotional, smaltzy, whatever you want to call it, but everyone connected with their old crew, with other crews and with the cutter herself. I sense the new life for her will be very productive. In about three weeks we will move her to Norfolk and from there to Richmond to her new home after some refitting has been done.

Thanks,
Bill Doherty
