May 11, 1969 (25th day of the 3rd month, Year of the Rooster [Ky Dau]) (US Tet69/Counteroffensive)(Zaffiri): Operation Apache Snow update: The four companies of the 1/506th are conducting RIFs of the northern A Shau Valley from a CP in the center of a LZ which is located on a hill about 500 meters east of the Laotian border. A mortar attack is launched against the CP in the evening, wounding many men and knocking out three of the four mortars before it's stopped by a gunship that wipes out the enemy mortar position by blowing up its ammo store. The 101st Airborne's assistant commander arrives in the middle of the mortar attack; his C&C ship is used to evacuate the wounded.

On Ap Bia Mountain, which is also known as Hill 937, B/3/187 gets orders to advance to the top of the hill, and sets off after daylight. They find enemy bodies in the area that had been bombed the previous evening and on them documents that identify the men as members of the 29th NVA Regiment, called The Pride of Ho Chi Minh and reputedly one of the best regiments in the NVA. Bravo Company finds commo wire leading up the mountain and around noon takes sniper fire but continues up the hill at 1400. At 1500, they are ambushed by NVA in spider holes and concealed positions. The point man is killed by small arms fire and a rocket hits the slackman and detonates one of the claymores he is carrying. Amid machine gun fire and RPGs, the Americans withdraw with their dead and wounded and call in artillery strikes for 15 minutes, and then two Cobras. The gunships arrive, but they fire on Col. Honeycutt's CP, killing two men and wounding 35 (including Honeycutt, though not seriously). Immediately after they are ordered off by a furious Col. Honeycutt, an NVA 120mm in Laos opens up on the CP and five enemy soldiers charge the post, but are driven back. The colonel orders Bravo Company to set up a night defensive perimeter. Now aware of the large enemy presence on the mountain, he sets things up to storm the summit in the morning with three companies, ordering Charlie Company to stop what it's doing and start a RIF straight east to the top of Dong Ap Bia, and telling Alpha Company to return to the CP and relieve Delta Company.

May 11, 1970 (7th day of the 4th month, Year of the Dog [Canh Tuat]) (US Sanctuary Counteroffensive): LZ Wildcat update.

May 11, 1972 (28th day of the 3rd month, Year of the Rat [Nham Ty]) (US Cease-Fire): Nguyen Hue/Easter Offensive: South Vietnamese Marines of the 369th Brigade and the 147th are holding at the My Chanh, blocking the NVA advance to Hue City and waiting for orders to retake Quang Tri City. The 369th Brigade Staff and the 3rd Artillery Company are stationed at Chinh An, a small, sparsely populated hamlet of about ten straw huts on a sand dune fenced in by a thin bamboo hedge with a low field in front.

At An Loc, after several hours of intensified artillery bombardment, the NVA begins a ground assault from all sides, with the main efforts coming from the west and northeast, where the enemy manages to penetrate the city's perimeter. With better coordination between them, the North Vietnamese infantry and tank columns seem to be pushing toward the center of the city, where they can link up and split the defenders into enclaves. During the fierce fighting that follows, the North Vietnamese make extensive use of the SA-7 missile against gun-ships and tactical air, but ARVN soldiers stand their ground and systematically try to destroy enemy tanks with LAWs. The ARVN 5th Division commander sends an airborne battalion from south of the city to the areas where the enemy has broken through the perimeter, and the NVA is stopped there, unable to advance further. Meanwhile, nearly 300 tactical air sorties are flown in support of An Loc during the day; at 0900, when the intensity of the attack is at a peak, B-52's begin what will be a total of 30 preplanned strikes over the next 24 hours. By noon, the enemy's attack has been completely broken and NVA troops are panicking. By early afternoon, the only tanks in sight are either destroyed or abandoned, several with motors still running. In one area, an entire enemy regiment which had attacked the 81st Airborne Ranger Group is effectively eliminated as a fighting force.

May 11, 1973 (9th day of the 4th month, Year of the Ox [Quy Suu]): Two helicopters of the Joint Military Commission ferrying 10 Viet Cong liaison officers are hit by Communist anti-aircraft fire near An Loc.

Default Operation Malheur I

This was the first operation carried out by Task Force Oregon. Task Force Oregon was a division-sized unit put together in APR67. It consisted of 196th Light Infantry Brigade, the 3rd brigade of the 25th Infantry Division, and the 1st brigade [the only brigade in-country at the time] of the 101st Airborne Division. The 3rd brigade of the 25th ID would later be redesignated as the 3rd brigade of the 4th ID.

Task Force Oregon was put together to take over the Quang Ngai Province AO, the southern-most part of I Corps. This would free up the Marines in the AO to return further north with the rest of the Marines, and for the 1st Cav to secure Highway 1 all the way to Danang.

On the 11MAY67 we [101st Abn. Div.] made a CA into the mountains west of Duc Pho. The whole brigade would be inserted into the mountains in less than 48hrs. The mountains had been a VC stronghold for a long time. It was a dangerous place; heavily mined and booby trapped and Charlie had many basecamps and weapons caches in the area. Most of the population in the area were either active VC or VC sympathizers. We made contact almost immediately, taking casualties. We would remain in the mountains for about a month-and-a-half.

Task Force Oregon would stay intact until late '67 when the 198th LIB and the 11th Infantry Brigade got in-country to join the 196th LIB to form the Americal Division. Their headquarters would be Chu Lai.
