Photo by: JOHNNY JOHNSON/155TH ARMORED BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM/FACEBOOK JACKSON, Miss. — A Mississippi National Guard unit has taken over a Middle East command during its year-long deployment. The 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team says it took command at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, on Sunday. The unit relieved the 2nd Brigade of the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division. The guard unit is tasked with deterring and reacting to threats in the Middle East as part of Operation Spartan Shield. The brigade mobilized in March and trained at Fort Bliss, Texas, before soldiers began arriving in Kuwait last month. It's the brigade's third deployment to the Middle East since 2001. Mississippi officials say it's the first time a National Guard unit has assumed this command. The Tupelo-based brigade has units in McComb, Senatobia, Starkville, Amory, Monticello and Meridian, as well as Kansas City, Kansas.
