Chilean military plane carrying 38 goes missing on way to Antarctica

Re: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/n...-to-antarctica

Chile’s air force lost contact with a military plane bound for Antarctica, and hopes are slim for the survival of those on board.

The C-130 Hercules was carrying 15 members of the air force, three Chilean soldiers, two civilians employed by an engineering and construction firm, and one university student. The remaining 17 on board were crew members.

The group departed Monday night and were heading to a military base on Antarctica’s King George Island to provide logistical support.

The plane disappeared over the Drake Passage, an area known for dangerous weather, although officials said that the weather was fine at the time that radio contact was lost, and that the plane had enough fuel to make the journey. The pilot of the plane had extensive flight experience.

No distress signal was sent out before the plane went missing.

According to Chilean air force Gen. Francisco Torres, the hunt for the missing plane had “begun immediately” after its disappearance. Four ships and eight planes are scouring the area, although there has not been any sign of the plane.

A statement from the air force said Tuesday that the military “continues the search in the sector where communication with the aircraft was lost, in order to rescue potential survivors.”

Note: Plains searching more data will follow if and when they find this aircraft right now they think the plane may have run out of fuel. Searching the route for wreckage or life rafts if any survived.
