Sid, You are correct it is the roman numeral one. I can see where someone could say "eye" though ... like in I Corp, the I is pronounced like the word eye

Your both wrong. Just like Army corps its not 1 corp it eye corps Not the eye like in eye ball but the letter eye. Same as for Field force Its Eye Force. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII(II is not a roman number its the 9th letter of the alphabet.

Ron, Following your logic the II in II Field Force is pronouced ... eye ..eye? You say the ninth letter of the alphabet twice? Don't think so

Sorry Ron, corps level headquarters were/are designated with Roman numerals and I and II Field Forces were corps level.

Ron.
I [Eye], II [too] never heard it called "Eye Field Force." It was always called "1st [First] Field Force." It was this way on both Tour I [1] and Tour II [2]. I [Eye] spent most of my time in II [2] Corps, but did go into I [Eye] Corps and III [3] Corps, II [too]. I [Eye] never made it II [to] IV [4] Corps though, until this year, MMV [2005].
Sorry, Bud. The I in I Field Force is a Roman Numeral, not a letter. Just like in II [2nd] Field Force; World War I [1]; and World War II [2].

Allyou that thing I is a roman numeral , $50. Says its an EYE. Not the eye ball but the 9th letter of the alphabet, Its not the roman numeral I,
In The corps as well IT 4 corps The roman numeral 4 IV , 3 cporps LLL, 2 corps LL, and eye corps I . There was Eye Field force and II field force the roman numeral 2 II. I never said it had to make any sence, it is the Army you know. Any takers???? Ron |

Damn ? looks like Ron was right as far as pronouncing the I as eye , but it is a roman numeral though just like I Corp, ?.. this passage is from the I Field Force Veterans Associations web site and I guess they should know
Glad I didn?t take your bet Ron ?Organized in Fort Hood, Texas in early 1965 with cadres from III Corps, I (pronounced "eye") Field Force Vietnam (originally Taskforce ALPHA) arrived in Vietnam on August 1st, 1965 to provide combat assistance to the South Vietnamese Army's II Corps and to control U.S. military operations in the Central Highlands. Headquartered at Nha Trang, it was redesignated I Field Force Vietnam, a corps-level organization, in March 1966.? http://www.ichiban1.org/html/iffv_history.htm

Vietnam order of battle book
Lists I Field Force under the numerical listings of units assigned to Vietnam, Under the Lettered units assigned to Vietnam there is no listing for I Field Force.
Army Vernacular ( thats a big word for slang ) refers to I designated units as I pronounced Eye. Example is I Corps pronunced Eye corps is the roman numeral I same is I field force. It Is not Eye Force, that is a slang term. There has never been an Army Corps Level Unit or higher designated as I the 9th letter in the alphabet. |
