old mounted bayonet question
...Col.
...I have an old bayonet that that been in my family's possession for a long time, and I don't have any way to post up a picture, however my Father tells me it's from the Reveloutionary war... ...it has a round upper cylindrical with a L- notch in it, and drops down about 2 ", and then the tri-sided blade is about 12-14"... ...the tip is twisted a bit, 3-4 inches back, and dear dad tells me it was probably stuck in someone, and the warpage is from the metal not be tempered back that far,( I'll go along with that) , and someones ribs did the misalignment... ...any idea of value, or date, maybe British for all I know...

Bayonet
I'd have to see it to identify it. Just about all bayonets from that era look the same with minor differences in the socket. If it has no rotating band around the socket it could be Revolutionary to around 1840. If it has a rotating band around the socket it is of later manufaccture. Some have an offset in the groove for the front sight/bayonet lug and these are pretty rare as they are for the Hall Rifle and can bring around $700. The Brown Bess bayonet and the French Charleville bayonet look about the same. Look for markings on the rear of the blade under the socket.
Those old blades bend pretty easily because they are not made of steel, they are malliable iron. Steel didn't come along until 1894 for usage in small arms. Average value for an old bayonet is around 2-3 hundred dollars. |

...the "locking slot" is about an inch in, just looked like it slid on, and rotated one direction for about 1/2 inch to lock on to some sort of "pin" on the barrel of whichever it fit... ...no moveable band... ...just plain old looking, and simple... ...if you find any pic's, and post them, I could match it up, and thanks...
