Re: A question for Combat Veterans of Vietnam
Getting away from all the political bullshit, the fact is that among
enlisted men it was common to knock a medal down a step or two if the guy did not have a lower medal. It was very common at higher headquarters to knock a SS down to a BS, or a BS down to an ACM if the soldier did not have the lower medal. I don't know why, it was just the way they did things. I had a lot of guys knocked down one step to a lower medal. At the officer level I don't believe this existed. A field grade officer put in for a SS had a good chance at getting it. I don't think many colonels would say "That guy doesn't have a Bronze Star, knock it down to that." I have no officer animosity. I just tell it like it is. It is better just to be truthful. It pisses people off at first, but they get used to it. |

They didn't imagine these things could be looked up years later on say the internet to check out the veracity of the event. 2. If they got it fair and square, they should post the executive orders or whatever that gave it to them. I would for instance like to see Hackworths, and a few others just for shits and giggles. |

Seems they went into an ambush agressively and one of the APC's went a little to far and was disabled by an RPG. My friend took his APC in and rescued the crew of the disabled APC in spite of intense fire(they were facing NVA). I have knowen this guy for well over thirty years and he never mentioned it. He was awarded a Bronze Star that put in his dresser drawer and never pulled it out. Who do you think deserved a Silver Star? Engineer |
