Boats
What I heard is that we'll be going into Pakistan, not so much to save the Musharef government, but to work with some of his chosen folks to pay a one-time call into the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan, to obtain the head of UBL. My best guess is that this will not start prior to mid-December. I could be wrong.

Most interesting, and I dare say somewhat encouraging, article in Feb. 2nd this year NEW YORKER... "Letter from Iraq: THE CANDIDATE, The scion of a famous Shiite family says that, if elected, he can run Iraq", by: Jon Lee Anderson, pp. 51-63 Interesting, very interesting... mainly about Abdulaziz al-Hakim, but much more sitrep than just that. Encouraging because it has been a hunch that unless the Shiite are, one way or another, in control of Iraq, then the Sunni and, probably, the Baathists will do whatever they can to regain some major part of what was taken away from them, sooner or later. Also, the Shia appear to be on relatively good terms with the Kurds. Your thoughts...

Part of the time-consuming efforts being undertaken by Amb. Bremmer is trying to identify and thoroughly vet those folks in either the Shia and in the Kurd communities who can speak in terms of moderation. He is painfully aware of the dangers of extremism, as has been manifested next door in Iran, and next door to that Afghanistan. Shucks, we can even look inside our own borders to see some pathetic examples of religious extremism, our own home-grown version.
Once these good folks have been vetted, Bremmer is prepared to move to the next step; I tend to agree with you that a coalition of Shia and Kurd would be enormously preferable to any rekindled Sunni/Baathist axis of evil.
