F--- You Lizards
Mel's post about lizards reminded me about the Fuck You lizards of VN. This is one of the icons of the VN experience to alot of guys. I don't know what their range was, but I remember them mostly in the Central Highlands. Any of you guys remember them in other AO's?
They were called Fuck You lizards because of the call that they made. However, it was often a stretch to say that the call actually sounded like it was saying this phrase. In typical GI humor, we would call the lizards US and frogs RA [REEE-UP] . The lizards were heavy bodied geckos about a foot long. Very large for a gecko. They could get pretty aggresive if messed with, and bite pretty hard. Saw one draw blood on a guy. They were pretty much nocturnal, so usually hard to locate. Pretty exotic creatures to this inner-city kid.

My first supervisor in the Air Force was from Del Rio Texas SSgt Milton Exodus. "X" told me about them when I was stationed at Little Rock AFB. He had been stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War and he told us about them noisy lizards also about the Rice Bugs they would catch at nite on the flight line and sell to the locals for about 50 cents apiece.

Jerry, we had the same rice bugs in the PI, and we'd do the same thing. They were attracted to the light-carts we used on the flightline, crash into the lamps, then we'd grab them and put them in plastic bags. I'd "trade" mine for whatever the local (ahem) "ladies" would offer. Made for some interesting bartering.

We had little gecko's that lived off of bugs in the hootches that used to give off that FU sound. They were only about 3 inches long and used to regularly short out the light switches when they crawled inside to lay eggs and got electrocuted. There were also some pretty big Iguana Lizards to be seen around Chu-Lai which could get up to 4 feet long. These guys were bad news. A bite from one of these guys could mean a major infection and some according to the base Vet. carried rabies which did not affect them but could be passed on in a bite. Never heard the big ones make any other kind of sound other than a nasty hiss.

Tails
Cpl ever have stewed " goana tail"?, mama san used to make it. If you don't know what it is at first, its OK, the guys that knew what it was before they had a chance to try it would normally turn it down, but hell I liked it, then again I learned to like rat-burgers.
