It has taken a little digging, but I believe that this proposal will be part of the Conference Committee discussions related to HR 1588. This is the Defense Authorization bill for 2003. The bill has provisions for the payment of concurrent receipt and the Administration is threatening a veto if it reaches the President with concurrent receipt still in the bill. My guess is that the threat to limit future entitlement to VA benefits is going to be used as a means to get the concurrent receipt provisions out of the bill during the conference committee process.
The House conferees are Duncan Hunter (committee chairman), Curt Weldon (PA), Joe Hefley (CO), Jim Saxton (NJ), John McHugh (NY), Terry Everett (AL), Roscoe Bartlett (MD), Buck McKeon (CA), Mac Thornberry (TX), John Hostettler (IN), Walter Jones (NC), Jim Ryun (KS), Jim Gibbons (NV), Robin Hayes (NC), Heather Wilson (NM), Ken Calvert (CA), Ike Skelton (MO), John Spratt (SC), Solomon Ortiz (TX), Lane Evans (IL), Gene Taylor (MS), Neil Abercrombie (HI), Marty Meehan (MA), Silvestre Reyes (TX), Vic Snyder (AR), Jim Turner (TX), Loretta Sanchez (CA), and Jim Cooper (TN). I'm still trying to find out who the Senate conferees are. I would suggest letters to the above House members (especially those from your state) stating that entitlement to VA benefits and payment of concurrent receipt are not mutually exclusive and urge them to reject any attempt to remove concurrent receipt and/or limit future VA entitlement.

GREAT ROUND TABLE!!
And there in lies the power of veterans! Don't just call your elected representatives with an opinion, whether they like it or not (and they won't), tell them that unless they get their shit firmly wired together, and back all of this Nation's honorable veterans, they have lost your support and voting power! Further advise them that even though you are but "An Army Of One", your voice will be heard, and a domino effect could (?) result! They may not take you seriously, few in politics really do at first, but if even one bureaucratic bonvivant emulates Humpty Dumpty, you will have sent your message, and like that thundering word of mouth, it, like a low-pressure distubance off of the African Coast, could soon build into a mighty tempest of moral change! "A Hurricane of Indignation" that can (and will) legally sweep away the stale air of political me-ism!! :cd: VERITAS

billr,
don't you find it slightly odd that there are NO representatives on this conference committee from Florida?? The state with the MOST military retirees has absolutely NO representation on this critical issue?? You don't suppose this exclusion was by "design" do you? Are not these committee members "assigned" by the majority party leadership?? If memory serves me correctly, I think this is how these members are "chosen". Could this once again be "politics" as usual??
Makes one wonder, huh?? :cd: :cd: :cd: :cd: :cd: :cd: :cd: BTW---E-mails & letters have been sent to each member from me anyway! Thanks for the "heads up". Let us know if and when you can find out who the Senators will be on this committee.

Larry, Humper, Gimpy, guys -
I am a HUGE proponent of using the newspapers to get major messages across... it has a tendency to do a lot in a short time for relatively little money, if well designed and written (i.e. not too many words, just the right ones, and NO FEAR). All we need is a donor, about $15,000 give or take. |
