Local deployments impact families, evoke memories of Vietnam War

In just a matter of days, some 4,000 Fort Lewis soldiers will begin
leaving for a yearlong assignment in Iraq with the Army's first
Stryker brigade.

Another 3,200 Washington National Guardsmen begin training Nov. 15 for
their own yearlong deployment there a few months later.

And by next April, the Army expects its second Stryker brigade, also
from Fort Lewis, to be ready for action, with another 4,000 or so
soldiers., by late next spring, there could be at least 11,200
Washington-state based troops toiling in the heat and danger of Iraq.

It's impossible to calculate how many folks will be back home worrying
and praying for their safety. But in the South Sound area, where a
great many of the soldiers and their families live, it's a big number.
