Default Yakima Training Center buildings dedicated to fallen soldiers

Yakima Training Center buildings dedicated to fallen soldiers

YAKIMA, Wash. — A Yakima man killed in the Iraq war will have an Army Reserve building dedicated in his honor Sunday at the Yakima Training Center.

The reserve’s Vehicle Maintenance Facility will be named for Army Maj. Alan Johnson, who died Jan. 26, 2007, when an improvised bomb went off near his vehicle in Muqdadiyah, Iraq.

Johnson, 44, was a shift sergeant with the Yakima County Department of Corrections. He served 15 years with the county and more than 25 years with the military.

The dedication ceremony, which is open to the public, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday.

During the same event, the Yakima Armed Forces Reserve Center will be dedicated to Army Sgt. Ross A. Clevenger.

Clevenger, who served with the 321st Engineer Battalion, died Feb. 8, 2007, when an improvised bomb exploded nearby while he was on a combat patrol in Karmah, Iraq. The Givens Hot Springs, Idaho, man was a student at Boise State University and had earned certification as a nursing assistant.

The new reserve center and two associated buildings — a $20 million project — resulted from the closure of reserve centers at the training center and in Pasco, as well as the closure of a state Army National Guard Readiness Center in Ellensburg. The changes were part of a nationwide shuffling of military bases prompted by congressional legislation in 2005.

More than 200 reserve and National Guard soldiers will use the facilities: the 45,300-square-foot reserve center, the 9,700-square-foot Vehicle Maintenance Shop and the 14,700-square-foot storage building.

Members of the public who wish to attend should be prepared to show photo identification and registration and insurance documents for their vehicle. The training center is at 970 Firing Center Road outside of Selah.
