Talk and Walk for the Cure Heather Joy Over three dozen women, men and children braved the chilly 40 degree weather to walk/run in support of breast cancer awareness month. The event on October 21st, sponsored by the Mildenhall Officer and Civilian Spouses Club, started with an informative talk by Kelly Livett, RAF Mildenhall Health and Wellness Center office manager. Livett spoke to about two dozen OCSC members and their invited guest about both the benefits of walking and healthy snacks. According to Livett walking offers many physical and emotional benefits, “walking reduces stress levels, and you can power walk for more than a mile before you calm down, and besides walking is fun.” Livett also spoke about the importance of breast cancer exams, reminding attendees that they should remember to complete self-breast exams often. “The best time to complete the exams is when you are all soaped up in the shower,” added Livett. For those unsure what they should be looking for, the HAWC does have a plastic gel breast mold that women can practice on. Joann Scott, OCSC President, explained that their October monthly social has become an annual event raising breast cancer awareness with all proceeds raised donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. “In one way or another whether it’s a family member, friend or even themselves everyone has been affected by breast cancer,” commented Scott, “so it is important that we have awareness and take care of our health.” OCSC member and Red Cross volunteer Allysyn Vujevic, who brought along her two children, decided to participate in the walk to support her friends and family members that have had to battle breast cancer.
