A Marine who shot and killed a fellow officer in his barracks in a row during a video game has been sentenced to six years in military prison.

Cpl. Spencer Daily, 21, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter at a court martial in South Carolina on January 6.

Daily admitted he had pointed his gun at Cpl. Tyler Wallingford while the pair were drinking alcohol and playing video games at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort last April.

The corporal, who said he had accidentally fired his weapon, was sentenced to 69 months of confinement, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Daily had been the only suspect in the shooting since Cpl. Wallingford was fatally wounded on April 12 last year.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service said he was found guilty of 'willful discharge of a firearm under circumstances to endanger human life' as well as involuntary manslaughter.

'Daily claimed that while drinking alcohol and playing a video game with the victim, he pointed his gun and accidentally shot the victim,' a statement said.

Responding to the verdict, Cpl. Wallingford's aunt Amy Hansen said: 'RIP Tyler Wallingford. Love you and miss you soooo much!'.

At the time of his death she said: 'I still can't believe my nephew is gone. My family is absolutely devastated. Tyler was just an adventurous fun loving young man.

'His whole life was an adventure. He absolutely loved the outdoors and being pushed physically to another level.'

Friends described Cpl. Wallingford as an 'amazing soul' who 'touched so many people's lives.'

'You were such a good man,' said one friend in a tribute on social media.

Both men were aircraft ordinance technicians with the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, based in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Wallingford was buried with full military honors in his home town of Standish, Maine, after his death last year.

The 21-year-old came from a family of firefighters, and worked with the Standish Fire Department while in high school.

Daily is originally from Youngstown, Ohio.

Personal note: Ya just never know how playing around can result in a lifetime of pain and suffering for both parties. Not intentional but still someone died as result. Regrets for all but we hope lessons were learned about game playing with loaded weapons.
