Nice Smile
One of the memories that will stay with a Nam Vet forever, no matter what their job or location was, is the image of the old mama-sans and papa-sans with black teeth. Them flashing that big, black grin at you. This was from a lifetime of chewing betel nuts. I guess it was as addictive as chewing tobacco and gave the chewer a buzz. Like chewing tobacco, it made the user spit....alot. I doubt if it was very good for you if swallowed. The spit was blood red. I saw it being chewed in every part of the country that I served in. The only G.I. that I ever knew to try it was an SF sergeant that I knew at Ft. Bragg. He said he got hooked on it while living with the Montagnards in the Central Highlands. He was a tobacco chewer when I met him. His teeth weren't black, but they had a brown tint to them . So how 'bout it? Anybody give it a try?

No body in my Platoon ever ever gained weight. The trick was to lose it gradually and not in large chunks in the middle of an explosion.

I went over there 150 lbs and came back 134. I was 6' 2". fIt took me several years to gain back my weight.
