Default Bainbridge antedote

Over the 4th of July weekend our Color Guard presented colors at a rodeo. Rodea folks are very patriotic and we always get a real welcome from the crowd. Anyway, as we were at present arms for the National Anthem I noticed a young man in the stands directly in front of us standing at rock solid attention, cap in his right hand over his heart. After we finished I asked if he was military. "yes Sir" he answered. He had returned from Iraq just a couple weeks before where he was a cav recon scout. We all shook the young soldiers hand, welcomed him home and told him how proud we were and that he was doing a great job. He seemed a little shy and surprised. But we could tell he felt good about it. As we left I turned to look back. He was surrounded by a crowd of rodeo fans shaking his hand, slapping him on the back and making him feel good. Made me feel good too.

Huh? Say what? Scouts who? Ah, you must be talking about the ?Scouts of the Sea?, the Cruiser Navy. That?s it, I?m sure. Sounds like a great event for the young Trooper and a proper welcome home. Good work all. When my Daughters were doing Rodeo barrel racing I got acquainted with the fine folks there and that was a great experience. But I have to report that I never made it above the rank of chief manure man, bill payer, tack fixer, trailer loader, truck driver and cajoler of the ornery critters called horses. Aarrgg, its hell to be marooned among the horse ridin landlubbers.

Bill, you just don't get it, they don't have horses in the Navy.

True story John,
During the Napoleonic Wars, serious consideration was given to the invasion of England. The French went so far as to design up a troop transport ship that was powered by horses. There were four or so turnstiles connected to side paddles and the horses were supposed to go round and round and round, thus powering the ship. From all accounts, the horses weren?t all that cooperative in that environment, so the idea was dropped.

During the VN War, a USN Destroyer with a black stallion painted on the bridge t-bone rammed us right smack on the forward starboard quarter, zow, what a mad scramble that caused. But I suppose that set my attitude about them ornery rascal horses, sure enough.
