Would anyone happen to know of any GOOD factual WW II books.

I have a copy of "Eight Stars to Victory" about the 9th Inf. Div. It is fantastic. Not to mention it is family history too.

I have a couple of others they are more fiction. I would really like to add to my library. I would especially like to find one that is about the 104th if that is possible specifically the 414th inf. I know they went through some things that are not well known.

Well, what are you looking for: specific units, theater campaigns, a country, overall books. Give you some ideas to start: Ban of Brothers, Helmet for my Pillow, D-Day, The Longest Day, Iwo Jima, The Devil in Baggy Pants, The Thin Red Line.

Unsung Valor

It is the story of a soldier that chronicles his time in the Army. He enlisted right out of High School and he chronicles his time from Basic right through until the end of the War. He was wounded but after he healed was sent back into action. The biography takes place in Europe. He stayed with occupation Army for about six months after the war ended. That was very interesting.

The man later became a History Professor with a Doctorate in English. I can't remember his name.

But several friends who were in WW II say it is the Best Book from an Individual Soldier's perspective they ever read.

I thought it was a very compelling book.

Doolittle Raid: Thirty Seconds Over TOkyo by Ted Larson, THe Doolittle Raid by Caroll V. GLines, or I Could never be so lucky again by James Doolittle.

...what was called "The Pictorial History Of WWII", and it was set up in volumes, might have been 11-12 books in all, hard bound, and each has thousands of pictures, and identifing captions with each...

Guadalcanal Diary by Tregaskis and Helmet For My Pillow by Leckie are musts fot the Pacific. Leckie also put together a pretty comprehensive work on all American conflicts.
In the ETO, I still like Ambrose, in spite of the controversy.
Ambrose and Leckie both have more than a couple books available.
Out of the park, but Tregaskis also wrote a book called Viet-Nam Diary - heard about it, but haven't read it - deals with the early "advisor" years.

SEATJERKER my dad had those books too. I think he got them from his father. I ended up with one of them but it was lost in a move long ago. I would love to be able to find those again. You are right though, they had a lot of stuff in them I would not want to see again.
