U.K.: Plot to bomb U.S.-bound planes foiled

Britain bans hand luggage fearing 'liquid chemical' device; arrests made

LONDON - British police thwarted on Thursday what they said was a plot to blow up aircraft in mid-flight between Britain and the United States and arrested more than 15 people.

Both countries stepped up security, causing severe delays at airports following the revelation of the plot, which a police source said was believed to involve a ?liquid chemical? device.

?A major terrorist plot to allegedly blow up aircraft in mid-flight has been disrupted,? a London police spokesman said.

?The police acting with the security service MI5 are investigating an alleged plot to bring down a number of aircraft through mid-flight explosions, causing a considerable loss of life,? Interior Minister John Reid said.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security raised the threat level for all commercial aircraft to high and U.S. authorities banned liquids, including drinks, from all U.S. commercial flights.

Britain?s security services raised the threat level in the country to ?critical? from ?severe,? the highest of its five ratings which means ?an attack is expected imminently.?

The British Airports Authority said it had asked all European carriers to suspend flights to London?s main Heathrow airport where new security measures caused severe delays.

The news came amid high international tension over the war in Lebanon and the week British Prime Minister Tony Blair headed on holiday to the Caribbean.

London police said they believed the intention was to target flights from Britain to the United States.

Shares in European airlines fell on the news, with British Airways shares opening nearly 5 percent lower. The pound also fell against the dollar and the euro.

Blair?s office said the prime minister had briefed President Bush on the operation during the night and had been in constant contact with Britain over the situation.

Severe threat
Reid said it was a ?very significant plot.?

?We are doing everything possible to disrupt any further terrorist activity,? he said in a statement. ?This will mean major disruption at all UK airports.?

Air passengers found they could take little on board.

?We cannot take on anything except wallets, passports and medicine,? Dana Cojocaru-Ivoska, 28, trying to get on a flight to return to her home in St. Louis, Missouri.

The security alert comes 13 months after four British Islamic extremist suicide bombers killed 52 people and injured about 700 on London?s transport network.

In a speech on Wednesday, Reid said Britain was in the most sustained period of severe threat since the end of World War Two and warned there was no room for complacency.

A police source said more than 15 people had been arrested.

?We don?t think that it was planned to happen today,? the source told Reuters. ?We had intelligence and we had to move against what was a planned attack.

?The plan was to take a ready-made explosive device rather than something which would be made up on board,? the source said.

Weak spot in security
Independent terrorism expert Paul Beaver said hand luggage was a weak spot in airport security.

?A laptop computer can carry enough explosives to blow up an aircraft,? he said. ?Hold baggage and cargo can be sniffed for explosives. You can?t do that for hand luggage at the moment. The technology is there, but it?s time consuming and expensive.?

Beaver said the nature of the alleged plot suggested a connection to al-Qaida.

?In the last two months al-Qaida promised that it would avenge Iraq and Afghanistan by attacking British and American aviation assets -- I see a direct link with that,? he said.

Britain has come under fire from Islamic militants for its military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Blair has also come under strong criticism at home and abroad for following the U.S. lead and refusing to call for an immediate cease-fire in the conflict between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.

British Airways said no hand baggage would be allowed on any of its planes leaving British airports. It said no electrical or battery powered items would be allowed in the cabin, including laptops and mobile phones.

British Airports Authority said all passengers on flights to the United States would be subject to a secondary search at the boarding gate and all liquids would also be removed.

The Home Office Web Site showed the threat rating had been raised to ?critical? from ?severe? earlier on Thursday. Britain has a five level rating for security threats, ranging from low to critical, which is the highest level.

But....let's not listen in on their phone conversations...that's MEAN! Bet they were listening in the U.K.

We are at war. When will our population here in the safe USA get it.

Not until it's too late....again. Supposedly something big in the works for Aug. 22 according to Iran.

They have figured out that never again can they take over a plane. Now...just blow them up.

Way to go UK. Now there should be a public beheading and fed to the pigs.
Wait, That would be crule to the pigs. Just a beheading.

I hear in the US you can no longer carry on liquid? and then they say "except" medication, baby formula, and etc?

One day when the US is srtuck hard our government and the people will wake up and deal with terrorist on there level, until then the terrorist are just laughing at us.

In order to defeat a extremist Muslem terrorist group you have to first get in there head, What do they fear most, an example of that would be pigs blood, Use the blood of a pig as a weapon, Daaaa. If you want to clear out a town of muslems don't bring guns, bring a tanker of pigs blood (Clearly marked) wth a explosive charge on it.

Another would be the picture of Mahomid, well, use it. Show Mahomid laying in bed with a pig or a Jew.

And lastly
War with terrorist must be void of Compassion, Remorse, and Sympathy. So all the bleeding heart Liberals must not be informed of any action until war is over.

Maybe this will be the wake up call to America to quit this namby-pamby, "we don't want to hurt anybody's feelings" and start some serious profiling of people. The bedwetters and liberals have had their way too long on this issue, all to the peril of the United States of America. Tap the phones of Muslims, read their frikking emails, put GPS devices on their cars - I don't care what measures must be taken, just protect America. And when anyone is convicted of doing anything to bring harm to America, an immediate execution is mandated, moving the culprit to the head of the line.

August 22nd is the anniversary date of the alleged Prophet Mohammed leaping into ?heaven? aboard a white stallion. This event is alleged to have taken place in Jerusalem and at what is now called the ?Dome of the Rock?. Iran says they will give the UN responses regarding nukes on that date. My guess is some dramatic demonstration of ?up-yours? is in the wind. It?s up for grabs as to what that demonstration might be or if there will be one at all.
But beyond doubt, we are witnessing a changing of the guard within the Islamic Revolution. The one-time leadership of Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda has been up- staged by Iran and Hezbollah. The late Al Qaeda terrorist, Al Zaquawi, opined that Hezbollah need be disarmed or destroyed but didn?t live to see who would attempt that needed work.

I have the sinking feeling it is already half past too late to recognize what dire straits we are passing through. Can?t help but notice that one of our upper Mid-west Universities now offers course work that, in essence, denies the existence Al Qaeda and offers up alternative explanations for 9/11. So maybe this activity will transform us from sitting ducks in denial to sitting ducks immersed in ignorance and contrived false notions.

Some may call that progress, but I see it as one deeper gulp of theorist hemlock as opposed to ?factist? reality. Both are deadly, just a matter of facing danger, real danger, head-on or letting that same real danger in sneak up on ya from behind.

Add another voice to the hysteria of the left: the official publishing arm of the Presbyterian church will print some book by another part of the kook fringe that 9-11 was the workings of GWB, and not Usama bin Laden. Does the term "useful idiots" come to mind?

Re: 22 Aug - I agree with Scamp, in that something large may very well be forthcoming. It's been almost 5 years since UBL did his level best, but since then, he's been retreating, hiding, dodging, running, and generally losing physical, psychological and theoritical ground to other extremists.

Saw that this morning but all this media they get really affects their cause. Whether they get caught or not they are still getting the attention they want. This type of terror works and it makes people pranoid.
