Default Rosa Parks is gone

When Rosa Parks refused to get up, an entire race of people began to stand up for their rights as human beings.

It was a simple act that took extraordinary courage in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955. It was a place where black people had no rights white people had to respect. It was a time when racial discrimination was so common, many blacks never questioned it.

At least not out loud.

But then came Rosa Parks.

This mild-mannered black woman refused to give up her seat on a city bus so a white man could sit down.

Jim Crow laws had met their match.

Parks' refusal infused 50,000 blacks in Montgomery with the will to walk rather than risk daily humiliation on the city's buses.

This gentle giant, whose quietness belied her toughness, became the catalyst for a movement that broke the back of legalized segregation in the United States, gave rise to the astounding leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and inspired fighters for freedom and justice throughout the world.

Parks, the beloved mother of the civil rights movement, is dead, a family member confirmed late Monday.

But already it's evident that her spirit lives in hundreds of thousands of people inspired by her unwavering commitment to work for a better world - a commitment that continued even after age and failing health slowed her in the 1990s.

In death as in life, she touched the well known and the little known people of the world.

Rest in peace, Rosa....and God bless you for not giving up your seat on that bus!

Read this and recalled.
It was early 1966 and I was based at Ft. Puke, Lousyana for AIT. One weekend we got a two day pass and got on a bus to go up to Shrievport for some weekend drunking. "We" was several members from the platoon and included black, white, brown and yellow but we were all in uniform and half way to Shrievport the bus stopped at a roadside restraunt and all of its passengers got off to get some food.
Bob, Luke and I walked in and sat down at the counter and a guy walks up to us and says, "we don't serve no niggrahs here."
I couldn't believe what I heard and asked him what he said and he repeated, "we don't serve NO NIGGRAHS here. Get that NIGGRAH outta here."
Luke got up and went back out to the bus.
I ordered two meals "to go" and went out to the bus when they arrived and enjoyed a meal with Luke.
Damn, did we get schnockered that weekend.
Now, here's where I get pissed.
Woke up this morning and read this while Fox News is on the boob-tube beside me and I here this quote from none other than Ted Kennedy who said "Rosa Parks was a true hero."
Damn I hate it when I have to agree with that Kennedy.

I recently bought a t-shirt that read:

Well-behaved women rarely make history.

Rosa Parks came to mind. Rest her soul, she was wonderful.

She had some tough sleding to go through back then - I know her sacrafice made things better for many after that. RIP Rosa

Thanks to her I live in a region of the country I can be truly proud of. When I was a kid even the title Southerner did not apply to blacks. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King-two great Southerners.
