We now know the private deal that was made between Kevin McCarthy and the House's Taliban 20 — the deal that permitted a California congressman to rise to the now-impotent speakership. The deal Screenshot 2023-01-14 at 12.18.19 PMinvolves blowing up the economy of the United States — plus its creditworthiness — as well as the global economy. This was the rancid depth to which McCarthy was willing to sink, all for a meaningless title.

The Washington Post has learned that the secret pact betwixt McCarthy and militants involves a plan to "prioritize debt," once the debt ceiling is reached. Their plan instructs the Treasury Department on what it must do when the time comes. In short, the plan involves igniting an economic catastrophe.

The House would demand that the White House must first make interest payments on the debt — hence, "debt prioritization." The House would also insist that payments continue on Social Security, Medicare, veterans benefits, and the military. Excluded would be federal expenditures on programs such as "Medicaid, food safety inspections, border control and air traffic control, to name just a handful of thousands of programs." (WP)

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has already instituted "extraordinary measures" to meet federal encumbrances — fiscal obligations agreed to by both chambers of Congress and the executive branch throughout past years. In a letter to pseudoSpeaker McCarthy, Yellen noted that "it is unlikely that cash and extraordinary measures will be exhausted before early June."

After that? The House proposal would cut about 20% of the money the federal government has already promised to spend. Overnight, a fiscal slash of around $1.2 trillion would go into effect. Such a sudden eruption of volcanic severity would throw the U.S. economy into a dark, unscalable ditch, while reverberating globally to equally catastrophic effect. But what do House Republicans care? They're nihilists.

We have seen this B movie before, in 2011 and again in 2013, when macroeconomically challenged Republicans also threatened the nation's economy and credit. Then, the Treasury Department made clear to them that "prioritizing payments was not technically possible, given the complexity of the millions of payments the federal government makes each day."

Against this, Republicans counter: Live with, Ms. Yellen. Figure it out. Source close to GOP "thinking" say its "internal planning" would force "Democrats to acknowledge that it is technically possible for the Treasury Department to continue to pay bondholders even if Congress doesn’t raise the debt limit."

Democratic thinking is this, however: "Any plan to pay bondholders but not fund school lunches or the FAA or food safety or XYZ is just target practice for us," says a senior Democratic aide.

Back in 2011 and 2013, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said "[debt] prioritization is just default by another name." The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, for Pete's sake, acknowledges that "prioritization doesn’t work. We had this discussion a decade ago." And Brian Riedl, a policy analyst at the conservative Manhattan Institute, says "Studying this in 2011 convinced us this would be a really bad idea and something we really did not want to happen. We didn’t end the exercise saying, 'This is feasible and smart.' We said, 'Let’s avoid this at all costs because it’s going to be a disaster.'"

Nevertheless, the Taliban 20 and its feckless pseudospeaker are plowing ahead, readying themselves to bury the U.S. in an economic avalanche of unprecedented magnitude. All for a title. For one, pathetic man.

House "moderates" had the opportunity to align with Democrats and install a speaker with a spine and at least a partially functioning brain. They demurred. And so when the time comes to avert an economic spocalypse, they'll likely demur once again — demonstrating, once again, that there's no difference between the Taliban 20 and other Republican members of the House.

This is a party so demonically wretched, so irretrievably godforsaken and sinister, only its wholesale uprooting and electoral devastation can drive a stake through its heart. The year 2024 cannot come too soon.

times find great difficulty in passinig the earlier said promises. Hence Absolute
Power corrupts absolutely.

negated once elected.

made - and then never see - or hear of them again - once elected.
