Two die in 'botched' Tikrit blast
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3407429.stm There has been an explosion in the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit, where a bomb went off inside a car, killing two Iraqis. Another Iraqi man in the vehicle was seriously injured. The Americans said it appeared that the men had been planning to attack a US patrol, but their bomb had gone off prematurely. A military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Steve Russell, said the car - a white Mercedes - was believed to have been used in previous attacks against the US-led coalition forces, including one in December in which three American soldiers were wounded. |

3 foreign fighters reportedly killed in Iraq
Iraqis say U.S. troops shot two Yemenis, Syrian The Associated Press http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3998839/ BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. troops killed three Arab foreigners and seized weapons after a gunbattle Monday at what Iraqi police described as a "terrorist safehouse" in a southeastern suburb of Baghdad, Iraqi officials said. The two Yemenis and one Syrian were killed after U.S. forces went to the house before dawn Monday in the Al-Moalemeen district and gave the Arabs 15 minutes to surrender, Iraqi police and local authorities said. When the Arabs refused, U.S. troops attacked, killing the three. A Yemeni woman was taken into custody, officials said. Two Yemeni women and three children were not detained, officials said. Jassim Mouhan, an official in the local municipal council, said the Americans found Kalashnikov weapons, grenades, TNT, and other explosives in the house. "This was a terrorist safehouse," Capt. Ali Dawoud said. The U.S. military press office said it had no report of the incident. Meanwhile, a top oil official told Dow Jones Newswires that Iraqi security foiled an alleged plot to attack Baghdad's Al-Doura oil refinery last week. Three non-Iraqi Arabs were arrested with two tons of explosives a half mile from the refinery, located 12 miles south of Baghdad, the refinery's director-general, Dathar Al-Khashab, told the news agency. "They were planning to bring the explosives inside and detonate them near the refinery," al-Khashab said. |
