HENDERSON HALL, Va.(Nov. 24, 2003) -- The Marine Corps recognized it's best logisticians at an awards ceremony in the base theater here on Monday Sept. 22.

Deputy Commandant of Installations and Logistics Lt. Gen. Richard Kelly presented plaques, marble bookends, and a gift certificate from the Marine Corps Association to the awardees.

The first award was The Marine Officer Logistician of the Year for 2002 presented to 1st Lt. Tad Scott.

As a supply officer for the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Scott was instrumental in the success of 11 operations in the Pacific Theater, including operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The award cited him for his initiative, improvisational skills, and ability to implement solutions to logistical problems.

The Marine Enlisted Logistician of the Year for 2002 is Gunnery Sgt. Mario Marquez.

While assigned as operations chief to MEU Service Support Group 24, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable, Marquez provided logistical expertise and leadership critical to combat readiness and responsiveness of the MEU. He developed processes and procedures that enhanced his unit's rapid response tactical logistics for all aspects of the MEU. His abilities also granted the MEU commander a flexible logistics response force.

The Marine Civilian Logistician of the Year for 2002 is Thomas Ramer. Larry Brantley accepted the award on his behalf.

As an operations officer at Marine Corps Base Camp Butler in the G-4 division, Ramer managed a staff of 120 Marines and Japanese civilians who provided transportation support to Marine Corps units on Okinawa, Fuji, and Ie-Shima Island. He implemented ideas that improved the base motor transport section's ability to support operating forces. One of project he was a critical part of was the implementation of The Green Line, a mass transportation system that covers all Marine camps on Okinawa.

The Logistics Organization/Unit of the Year for 2002 is G-4 Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Smedley D. Butler, Okinawa, Japan. Larry Brantley accepted the award on behalf of the unit.

The unit was cited as being one of the most aggressive logistical support organizations in the Marine Corps. In addition to implementing The Green Line mass transportation system, the unit was able to reduce environmental risk and costs associated with the purchasing, managing, storage and disposal of hazardous material and waste generated by III MEF and other services in the Okinawa military community.

A board selected the winners based on their contributions in the Marine Corps logistics field. These contributions include developing or enhancing concepts, doctrine, technology, or procedures. Some criteria also looked at were reducing costs, improving logistics response time, and logistical ideas that could be implemented Corps-wide.
