Illinois Governor Signs Military Family Leave Act
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) recently signed into law Senate Bill 1627, the Illinois Military Family Leave Act. The new law provides 15 to 30 days of leave time to the spouse or parents of a soldier who has been called to more than one month of active duty. Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn noted that his office has heard from many family members of Guard or Reserve members called to active duty who had to quit their jobs or were fired simply because they needed extra time off during deployment. He stated: "The Illinois Military Family Leave Act is fair to employers and shows compassion to military families." This bill is the first of its kind in the country.
