Special sports day brings out the best

More than 200 men and women of all ages from the local community demonstrated their athletic abilities at the 29th annual Joan Mann Special Sports Day on September 18 on RAF Mildenhall. Named in honor of the British Ministry of Defense worker who organized the first event, Joan Mann, the day sees Britons who have special needs paired with airmen and civilian volunteers from RAFs Lakenheath and Mildenhall for a day of Olympic-style events. The day began with a traditional parade of athletes complete with torch and bagpipe procession leader and commenced with an awards ceremony. Events included basketball and football tosses, a tennis ball bounce, obstacle course and wheelchair slalom.
