Although the South likes to claim it was a war of northern aggression, they started the shooting war at Fort Sumpter, where they shot at not only American soldiers but the American flag. And they didn't have enough rifles to supply all the people who wanted to take a shot at the American flag and American soldiers! Ultimately they forced the American flag to be hauled down and replaced with the flag of their new country: the Confederate states of America--definitely not the USA's flag.
Now could you 'splane to me how trying to break away from the USof A by force, and shooting at the American flag and American soldiers entitles you to call yourself a good American?
There's zillions of Yankee Americans want to know the answer to that question--this may be a surprise to the South but there's Civil War memorials to dead soldiers scattered all over the Northern states too--for bringing the South back into America by force.
the South should only be glad they lost, or at least they should if they value being Americans

This is an answer to a question and by all means not meant to start an argument over a war that occurred over 150 years ago that caused the most death of Americans(over 600,000) in 4 years then any other war in the history of the US and it happened under a Republican President to boot!

A short time line to prove that with out Lincoln declaring war with out the US Congress OK, That he started the war and not the Southern Democrats who seceded when they didn't like the out come of the 1860 presidential election!

January 1861 -- The South Secedes.

When Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president, the South Carolina legislature perceived a threat. Calling a state convention, the delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the union known as the united States of America. The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states -- Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas -- and the threat of secession by four more -- Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America.

February 1861 -- The South Creates a Government.

At a convention in Montgomery, Alabama, the seven seceding states created the Confederate Constitution, a document similar to the United States Constitution, but with greater stress on the autonomy of each state. Jefferson Davis was named provisional president of the Confederacy until elections could be held.

February 1861 -- The South Seizes Federal Forts.

When President Buchanan -- Lincoln's predecessor -- refused to surrender southern federal forts to the seceding states, southern state troops seized them. At Fort Sumter, South Carolina troops repulsed a supply ship trying to reach federal forces based in the fort. The ship was forced to return to New York, its supplies undelivered.

March 1861 -- Lincoln's Inauguration.

At Lincoln's inauguration on March 4, the new president said he had no plans to end slavery in those states where it already existed, but he also said he would not accept secession. He hoped to resolve the national crisis without warfare.

April 1861 -- Attack on Fort Sumter.

When President Lincoln planned to send supplies to Fort Sumter, he alerted the state in advance, in an attempt to avoid hostilities. South Carolina, however, feared a trick; the commander of the fort, Robert Anderson, was asked to surrender immediately. Anderson offered to surrender, but only after he had exhausted his supplies. His offer was rejected, and on April 12, the Civil War began with shots fired on the fort. Fort Sumter eventually was surrendered to South Carolina.

April 1861 -- Four More States Join the Confederacy.

The attack on Fort Sumter prompted four more states to join the Confederacy. With Virginia's secession, Richmond was named the Confederate capitol.

If there would have been more diplomacy this uncalled for war wouldn't have occurred but Lincoln like other stubborn presidents couldn't accept that some people didn't agree with him and declared war against Americans not the other way. The Northern Republicans were taxing the Southern States 60% tariffs on the Cotton and 15% tariffs on Tobacco they sold to Europe to support the northern states industrial revolution.Today I read in the papers all the time States like NY and other heavy industry and Financial States complaining about supporting the poor folks down south. Well to them I say if Lincoln hadn't of interfered back in 1861 and used Diplomacy the Blue States up North would be running the USA and the Red States would already Just be the CSA and like the British would be the best Allies of the USA in the world. But, like I said the war was over 150 years ago and a lot of water is under the bridge. Many a good sons of Confederate veterans has been to war since 1901 and made quite a mark on the history of the USA to include Gen.John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing (MO), Gen.George Smith Patton Jr.(VA), Gen.Dwight D. Eisenhower (TX),Gen.Omar Nelson Bradley (MO),and let us not forget fellow southerns here that served honorably in WW2 ,Korea ,Vietnam ,Lebanon Marine Barracks ,Granada ,Somalia, Bosnia ,the Gulf War ,Afghanistan ,and Iraq.
