Thirteen years ago today I was standing on top of a HEMTT looking to the north and trying to find an Iraqi tank column that we had run into just a short time earlier. Could not locate them through the NVG's until their lead T-62 let loose with a volley. Soon, their entire line was firing in our general direction, having little or no night vision capabilities, they were reconing by fire to locate us.
Between volley I heard a deep rumbling and turning to the South, night vision drive lights extended from horizon to horizon. The guy next to me, Wayne W, ask what the noise was and I responded in true Army fashion "OH, shit!" I remember Wayne kept asking and I would respond the same way. I remember thinking, well this is how she's going to end. About that time, the Field First SGT, Joe Dyer, came up on the net and stated "The 1st Cav is coming from the south, "Do not shoot in any direction or they will F__k us up, I repeat do not fire your weapons!" about 10 minutes later they came on line with my unit and all hell really broke loose. Never in all the combined arms demos that I fire for or any training that I was ever involved in did I see such and awesome display of fire power. Thank God we did not lose more that night. Welcome home brothers, may the ghost leave us and the hurt go away. Stay safe guys! Trav
