Why Humor is Good for You

Why Humor is Good for You

Scientists still struggle to explain exactly what makes people laugh. And yes, the concept of humor is itself elusive.

Plus, we all know that humor is subjective.

Although everyone understands intuitively what humor is, and dictionaries may define it simply as “the quality of being amusing,” perhaps the one aspect we do fully understand is that it’s good for the human body.

And we all need to be in our best health right now. If you need a reason to get out of the doldrums and watch a cute cat video or call a friend, we’ve got plenty for you.

Some of the mental and physical benefits include:

* Improves immunity – Laughing strengthens the immune system by decreasing stress hormones, increasing immune cells and antibodies.

* Automatic stress-reliever – Embracing life’s funny moments relieves stress by relaxing muscles throughout the body and releases endorphins that boost moods.

* Natural pain reducer – Endorphins released by laughter also help reduce pain. Goodbye, ibuprofen.

* Acts as an emotional release – When you laugh, you relieve negative emotions, which can reduce anxiety and sadness.

* Offers new perspective – Having a sense of humor is good for many situations, but especially when life throws challenges your way. It can help you see things from a perspective that makes you feel safer.

Plus, it’s good for your relationship. Humor can help relationships by:

* Reducing the room tension – A dose of good humor can quickly diffuse anger and tension by laughing together.

* Brings you closer together – When you share positive feelings and inside jokes together, it helps build emotional connections that help you navigate stress, disappointments, and arguments.

* Makes forgiveness easier – If you can lighten the mood with humor, it helps you to forgive and move past negative moments faster.

There’s humor, and then there’s military humor. It doesn’t have to be offensive, either. Like most good comedy, military jokes that are relevant to real life are even more enjoyable because they’re so relatable.

Here we share some our favorite military jokes below:

1. Real Estate

The reason the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines bicker among themselves is because they don’t speak the same language. For instance, here’s what happens after they secure a building:

The Army will post guards around the building.

The Navy will turn out the lights and lock all the doors.

The Marines will kill everybody inside and then set up headquarters.

The Air Force will take out a five-year lease with an option to buy at the end.

2. Air Force and the Wife

You’ve all heard of the Air Force’s ultra-high-security, super-secret base in Nevada, known simply as Area 51?

Well, late one afternoon, the Air Force folks out at Area 51 were very surprised to see a Cessna landing at their “secret” base. They immediately impounded the aircraft and hauled the pilot into an interrogation room.

The pilot’s story was that he took off from Vegas, got lost, and spotted the base just as he was about to run out of fuel. The Air Force started a full FBI background check on the pilot and held him overnight during the investigation.

By the next day, they were finally convinced that the pilot really was lost and wasn’t a spy. They gassed up his airplane, gave him a terrifying “you-did-not-see-a-base” briefing, complete with threats of spending the rest of his life in prison, told him Vegas was that-a-way on such-and-such a heading, and sent him on his way.

The day after that though, to the total disbelief of the Air Force, the same Cessna showed up again. Once again, the MP’s surrounded the plane, only this time there were two people in the plane.

The same pilot jumped out and said, “Do anything you want to me, but my wife is in the plane and you have to tell her where I was last night!”

3. Military Kids

What do you call kids in the military?

Infantry.

4. Don’t Worry

This Sergeant worried about everything. Then one day the other Sergeants in his unit heard him whistling happily and looking noticeably relaxed.

“What happened?” they asked him in astonishment.

He said, “I’m paying a private to do all my worrying for me.”

“How much do you pay him?’ they asked.

“Two thousand dollars a week,” he replied.

“Wow! How can you afford that?,” they asked.

“I can’t,” he said. “But that’s his worry.”

5. Gone Fishing

The rain was pouring and there was a big puddle in front of the pub just outside the Navy base. A ragged old Marine Gunnery Sgt. was standing near the edge with a fishing rod, his line in the puddle.

A curious young Navy fighter pilot came over to him and asked what he was doing.

“Fishing,” the old guy simply said.

“Poor old fool,” the Navy officer thought and he invited the ragged old Marine into the pub for a drink.

As he felt he should start some conversation while they were sipping their whiskey, the smart-ass fighter pilot asked, “And how many have you caught?’

“You’re the eighth,” the old Marine Gunny answered.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few ways to find the humor:

* Get your giggles in – Smile and laugh at something every day. Even when you don’t feel like it, just the physical act of smiling can boost your mood.

* Practice gratitude – Everyone has something to be thankful for every day. When possible, look for the funny moments in your day to be grateful for.

* Bring up humor in conversation – Ask questions like “What’s the funniest thing you’ve done?” Doing so can bring up great nostalgia about childhood pranks, colleague interactions, and more.

* Share jokes – Whether it’s the above military jokes or other humor, share the joy of laughing with others.

* Indulge in comedy – After a long day of work, relax and watch funny movies or TV shows.

* Be playful – Play with pets, children, and/or just be silly with people around you.

Note: The best way to reduce stress is through humor!

No matter how you bring humor into your life, aim for it daily. It can have a significant impact on your day-to-day well-being - if you learn to find humor in all areas of life.

Plus, laughing is contagious. And who wouldn’t want to spread around a bit more happiness in times like these?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joking around can take away your tension and thus regain composure - stress will kill you otherwise! So they call you a joker - it could be worse! Joker's are stress reliever's and better than taking a pill - where as you can't focus - now your in nowhere land - and not worth a shit.
-
We've all been there at one time or another - the winner is the one who can focus on the issues of that moment. As they say - remember your training - and the key point I was told during my training was to stay focused. Block everything else out. Others say - stay the course. But will someday be in those shoes to understand why focus is the key! Without out it you chances diminish - and it could be you - or them that walks away.
-
Even civvies confront issues periodically and here they've not be trained to cope with a circumstance of which they may not be handle. Panic is the worse emotion to come into play. In panic you again are once more useless to do what is needed - its not easy to control fear or something with excess trauma.
-
Personal story:
-
As a civvy a friend of mine was at a bar with Butch and me - and we'd had a few - The Fireman went outside and got knifed by three guys - I ran out of the bar to find he's been gutted and his stomach was open and bleeding out and I just reacted down and pushed his organs back in and held the two cut ends together by my hands - and Butch came out and drove us to the hospital - 15 miles away and broke the speeding records getting there.
-
Upon our arrival there was six squads they opened the door with their guns out and saw three of us in the front seat - and me holding the fireman's stomach wound together with my hands. Blood everywhere the car we were in was Butch's new caddy with white leather interior and blood everywhere. I got out of the car holding the fireman stomach together and went up to the surgery room with the doctors telling me not to let loose. The details were given to the police officers and Butch and I went home. Five hours the police were at my house and said I had to go with them to the Cal City police Dept. to ID the guys that did this. It was dark down there three guys in the cell and I said yes that's them.
-
The Fireman survived - his Father thanked me taking care of his son. My sister didn't quite understand that I could do what I did as it was gory and my wife was in shock. I said I just recall our first aide training for open wounds and that's all I could say. To this very day I don't know why - but I just reacted - so my military training and first aide training saved this guys life - I didn't think about it - I just did it.
-
Was I focused - yes - I didn't I think about what to do - I just did what I did based on my training and wasn't thinking about the ramifications. I felt it would take too long for an ambulance to get to him and he was bleeding out something terrible. I was just reacting to my field training. And no I'm not a corpsman - just another soldier taking what I learned and used it.

Arrow A few weeks later

Butch and I had just finished up a small part-time job. So we stopped a McDonalds in Harvey, IL I went in to order some food.
Came out with our food found Butchy on the ground he got in a fight outside (while I was inside) and the guy hit with a sledge
hammer in his chest. I drove Butch to the hospital - he had three cracked ribs and a hair line fracture in his sternum.
-
Talk about bad luck - Jesus!
-
Least to say Butch - has passed a way not to long ago - he was X-Army soldier during NAM.
I've lost about 4 more guys I knew growing up - plus those four also went to Nam and got killed.
I think I said this before in 61 I was shot in back with a 20 gauge shot gun less than three foot away.
Had a hole about as big as grapefruit. But in 63 I enlisting they took me after I signed a waiver -
and passed the PT test. And I too ended up with NAM duty. - got out in 75.
-
Five guys in the neighborhood got killed in NAM. My mom freaked out when I enlisted as most Mother's did -
and so did my Brother who later died from AO.
-
The family is full of military men going back to WWI. My Dad was blow out of jeep by a mine in Alaska -
he's gone and so are all my Uncles that served during WWII.
-
So don't ever say we weren't American's - we all mostly enlisted except one or two got drafted - but still went.
-
It's tough being a Veteran and looking back at all the Bud's and family that are no longer walking on this earth.
But when live they were all hard as nails growing up in tough areas - and were all American's - and did their
Duty to God and Country, I'm proud of them all!
