Question "Jarhead"?

Where did the affectionate name "Jarhead" come from?

Whta is its origin?

Do any Marines regard it as an insult?

Default Jarhead

The phrase, in legend, came from the hair cut. A bowl, of sorts, was placed on the head, and all the hair outside of the bowl was cut off. The modern version is the "high and tight" or "whitewall" style.
Like most things, it is how do you use "Jarhead". When I served in the late 60s, if a sailor used the term, there would be a fight.

I have a dear dear swabbie friend, former SeaBee... gnarly old coot. Between us we have a mutual pal, a certain honorably retired Marine officer, whom we adore and tease since his license plate deals with the topic of Semper Fi...

Well, Eddie (the squid) was always forthing with calling our buddy "Jarhead", loudly, time after time. The Marine put up with it.

I can say though, I felt as if it would be okay for the squids to call out that name to a Marine, but not for me to do so (being a Zoomer). Kinda like how we feel about the army since we were once the Army Air Corps, or something.

I said once to somebody when they (the person had never served anywhere) called the O a "jarhead", I said to them straight into their face, "Don't do that." I could go on from there, but would have if'n they'd challenged me.

That O is a good good man, so I gave him leave to speak to a Marine as he did. That SeaBee, too, is a good good man... and he claimed privileges I would not dare to utter.

That's all, just wondering if a Marine would take offense if in teasing a Zoomie would use the word.

Not in the least!!! It, like other words, they have a reflection within the way THEY ARE SAID!!! I have a seabee friend, that if he didn't refer to me in that manner, I'd start wondering what the hell I'd done wrong!!!

Well okay then humper... if you and 65 say so... but still knowing some Marines tend to fire (accurately) first and then ask "Who Goes There", I always walk around with a portable bunker here on PF anyhow

I think from one Vet to another Vet it's generally accepted.

Sure tends to piss me off when some non serving, never has served commie basturd uses any of the terms we call each other.

I hate it when those wannabes do that. They get a real funny look on their face when a 6'6" Veteran Sergeant of Marines calls 'em on it, too.

I did figger out why I used to get so upset when someone called me jarhead.

....I thought they were sayin' JUGhead....
