As the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island continues to spew lava and ash, the state’s National Guard troops are playing a central role in keeping citizens safe.

Operation Pa’a Mau — which includes both Army and Air Guard personnel — has been underway since May 14. With help from active duty Marines, soldiers and sailors as well as Guardsmen from other states, the Hawaii Guard is securing and assessing the area around the explosion and staying prepared for any necessary air evacuations.

“Our mission here is to save lives, prevent human suffering and to allow the people affected by volcanic activity to live their lives the best they can,” said Army Command Sgt. Maj. Elva Schaben, who has been deployed on the operation for the last month.

A total of 380 Guard troops have been activated in response to the volcano. Some are helping the Hilo Police Department patrol the area, while others are operating closer to the fissures, taking gas measurements to assess the risk to the surrounding communities.

“This is real-world training, boots-on-the-ground training,” said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ron Anderson, the senior enlisted leader for the Hawaii Air National Guard. “That is absolutely a force enabler for our folks downrange tied to the war fight.”

At least 600 homes have been destroyed since the volcano eruptions began in early May, according to a report by ABC News. Among those that have lost everything are four Guard troops who continue to serve the community even as their homes and personal lives remain in ruins.

The Guard has sent UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters to the scene, although no air evacuations have occurred yet. Schaben said the Guard’s team of soldiers and airmen remains prepared to airlift 400 people in four hours, should that be necessary.

“There is no limit to the operation,” Schaben said. “We are working on a rotation plan, but we will still have soldiers here because as we transition, the community is still going to need our support.”

National Guard stands by to evacuate up to 1,000 from quakes, lava as Hawaii volcano erupts

U.S. Geological Survey shows lava spattering from an area between active Fissures 16 and 20, on the lower east rift of the Kilauea volcano, near Pahoa, Hawaii. Plumes range from 1 to 2 kilometers (3,000 to 6,000 feet) above the ground. Officials say some vents formed by Kilauea volcano are releasing such high levels of sulfur dioxide that the gas poses an immediate danger to anyone nearby. (U.S. Geological Survey via AP)

This story has been updated since it was originally published at mid-day Thursday EST.

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has erupted from its summit, shooting a dusty plume of ash about 30,000 feet into the sky.

Mike Poland, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, confirmed the explosion on Thursday. It comes after more than a dozen fissures recently opened miles to the east of the crater and spewed lava into neighborhoods on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Those areas were evacuated as lava destroyed at least 26 homes and 10 other structures.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige said the state is forming a joint task force that could handle mass evacuations of the Big Island’s Puna district if lava from Kilauea volcano covers major roads and isolates the area.

Hawaii Army National Guard Brig. Gen. Kenneth Hara, the task force commander, said he’s anticipating potentially having to evacuate about 1,000 people, based on what he’s been told by Hawaii County. But he said some people may choose to stay behind because they are self-sufficient.

Hara said there are currently about 1,200 soldiers and nine UH-60 helicopters currently training on the Big Island. He may also request forces from the U.S. Pacific Command if needed.

The crater sits within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which has been closed since May 11.

Officials have said they didn’t expect the explosion to be deadly as long as people remained out of park.

Earthquakes were damaging roads and buildings on Hawaii's Big Island on Wednesday as ash emissions streamed from Kilauea volcano.

Cracks formed on a highway near the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, said the Hawaii Police Department.

“We’re all safe, and I wish they’d open the park back up, but they have to keep it safe for everybody,” said Ken McGilvray, an area resident. “We live on a volcano!”

Because of the falling ash, USGS scientists operated from a backup command center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

For those on the ground near the lava vents, health warnings were issued because of dangerous volcanic gases.

An air-quality alert was in effect for an area near the Lanipuna Gardens subdivision. That area was evacuated shortly after the eruption began May 3. Most fissures are in that subdivision or the adjoining Leilani Estates neighborhood.

After Fuego eruption, Air Force steps in to rescue children

A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III from the Mississippi Air National Guard's 172nd Airlift Wing transported six children injured during the Fuego volcano explosion in Guatemala to Galveston, Texas, for medical treatment at Shriners Hospital for Children. A joint medical team from the Mississippi ANG's 183rd Air Evacuation Squadron and Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, provided en route medical treatment during the flight.

The Mississippi Air National Guard was activated by U.S. Southern Command to provide lifesaving humanitarian assistance to victims of the Fuego volcano eruption in Guatemala.

A C-17 Globemaster III from the 172nd Airlift Wing in Jackson, Mississippi, transported six burn victims — four extremely critical and two critical — from Guatemala to Galveston, Texas, on Wednesday.

The victims, who are all children, will receive treatment at Shriners Hospital for Children for burns and other injuries sustained in the eruption.

“This ranks right up there with one of the most important missions I think that the 172nd does as far as humanitarian relief,” said Capt. David Hutchins, 183rd Airlift Squadron pilot. “Being able to use the aircraft that we have, and the AE Squadron that we have as well, to evacuate these people out in a timely manner and get them the help that they need.”

Pediatric intensive care and burn victim treatment specialists from San Antonio Military Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, provided care to the patients en route.

“This is something we don’t always get to do, dealing with civilians, from babies up to teenagers,” said Maj. Jennifer Harless, 183rd Air Evacuation Squadron flight nurse. “Most of the time we deal more with the adults and trauma, so this is a little different for us, but not something we can’t handle because we do train for it.”

The Mississippi Air National Guard was notified of the mission in the wee hours of the morning and assembled a crew within two hours. The team worked for more than 24 hours straight to safely deliver the patients and their family members to the United States.

“It shows the length that the Air Force will go to save life, limb or eyesight, not just for their military members, but for the civilian members as well,” said Lt. Col. Teri Dawn Neely of the 183rd Air Evacuation Squadron. “They went to great lengths to go and to help save these children and bring them to higher echelons of care.”
