Event to salute Vietnam veterans

Vietnam Vet Day

Where: March Field Air Museum, Van Buren Boulevard at Interstate 215.

When: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Cost: Adults $5; children $3; children under 5 are free.

MARCH AIR RESERVE BASE - Retired Lt. Col. Richard Heitman flew 178
missions over Vietnam.

He piloted a B-52 Stratofortress bomber in the last campaign of the
Vietnam War. During Operation Linebacker Two, an 11-day mission that
began Dec. 18, 1972, 26 aircraft were shot down by the North
Vietnamese. Fifteen of those planes were B-52 bombers. At the end of
the mission, 93 military personnel in the operation were listed as
missing in action.

Heitman, 69, of Banning was one of the fortunate ones. He returned
home to continue his career in the Air Force. He spent his last five
years of service stationed at what is now March Air Reserve Base.
