Default New Toy

Just got a percussion .38 cal New York Style Half Stock rifle which was once in the collection of Teddy Roosevelt III. It's got dovetails for a full bbl length optical sight which was once mounted on it. It's identical to other rifles that were used by New York Regiments as sniper rifles during the Civil War.

Default Looks GREAT, Col Murph...

I'd be wantin' to test that rifle off the bench to see how tight it will shoot.

Let us know when ya shoot it, will ya?

P.S. Am I seeing a set trigger?

Yes, it has a set trigger. Bore is in good shape so I will be firing it a few times before it gets cleaned, oiled and put away. The bullets that they used were not round ball, but rather elongated bullets with a paper patch. Should be pretty accurate even with the iron sights.

Col Murph,

At one time I learned to make and wrap paper patched bullets for a 45-90 Sharps straight.
It took a bit of a knack to learn to wrap the bullets, but once I got it figured out, it was fun.

That halfstock rifle sure would look good with an older Unirtal external adjustment scope on it.The older scopes are smaller than 1 inch in dia. and look period on that style rifle. Heck the older scopes arent that far removed from the age of your rifle. The 1894 Win. is really old compared to 2004 but we dont notice it much because 1894s are still being made in 30/30 and 35 Remington. A friend of mine has a Win. Browning single shot with an old Unirtal scope that is a fine hunting rifle in 45/70. Since your rifle already had a scope on it you could hunt with it with a scope installed without anyone saying you are cheating.
