Yohnka, Pastel on paper, undated. "The figure I draw is the depersonalized soldier, the soldier within, who has suppressed the emotion of the community of war. To me it is impossible to see war as anything but an old habit of thinking, an old frame of mind, and an old male political maneuver. These figures are the vehicle of my interpretation of the moment in Vietnam that deal with the remoteness, transcendence, and finality of life. They are silent screams, ritual destruction, intoxication, insanity, sorrow, and death. They are images of power, but also represent savage men. They are caught between the image of a soldier dehumanized by war and that of a man trapped in a state of raw conflict." "A very close friend of mine was killed the day before he was to leave Vietnam. He was assigned to a rescue squad and volunteered for a rescue mission. It is painful to live with death constantly surrounding you, knowing that it could grab you just as easily as the other guy. I thank God every day for allowing me to return alive and as a whole person, but the memories are difficult to extinguish. This work was not done by the congressman riding to work in his chauffeur-driven limousine, reading the Washington Post, nor was it done by the anchorman on the six o'clock news, but by the man who pulled the trigger on the M-16, dropped the bombs, and threw the hand grenades. This is the war by those who fought it." The art that comes out of Vietnam is unique to that war; it was not produced by war illustrators, but by soldiers. We have acted upon that primal aesthetic urge to make visual commentary on an event that profoundly touched our bodies, hearts, spirits, souls--whatever it is that constitutes the Human Thing and causes it to make art."

2 comments David Mon, 13 Jan 2003 09:53:15 -0800 Class of '67 http://www.patriotfiles.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5093

by: David

Description: Charles Shobe, Oil on canvas, 1984. "In 1984 I began to search for a design or symbol to use for a series of art works on political issues; I chose the American flag. I wanted to move away from abstraction; in the process I found myself rediscovering the pain from these past events." Fornelli, Teak and brass "Any warrior has something happen when he puts on his battle clothes--you feel that it gives you a kind of magical power, makes you invisible or gives you strength inside. So something takes over that as a rational person you know is ridiculous. But if you thought that way in combat you'd be dead. You're so vulnerable...You know, there is a certain strange high, and excitement about somebody shooting at you and you at them. It's hard to breathe and pushes on your shoulders. This heavy air, the heat, the humidity of Vietnam, is something you don't know. It's the kind of air you can feel touching your body and pushing at you." 50-caliber shell casings, 1965. "Our home base sat at the foot of the only mountain range for about a hundred miles. It consisted of two mountains: Nui Ba Den and Nui Ba Ra. These paintings are from a diary that was written in my brain and in the brains of thousands of others, on a daily basis in Vietnam. Some of the situations did happen to me; others were bad dreams, fears of what might happen, hallucinations; images that seemed to appear out of nowhere, for no reason. It is through painting that Vietnam is now giving me and many others a new life. It is through art that we fight back, and it is through the eyes and hands of veterans that the truth is told."

1 comment David Mon, 13 Jan 2003 09:53:15 -0800 '56 Victoria http://www.patriotfiles.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5101

by: David

Description: Michael Kelley, Pencil on paper, 1978. "I remember the randomness in the scattered pile of spent shell casings that grew next the the M-60 machine gun that I was operating. There was an odd beauty in the golden, reflective heap of spent links and brass that would litter the edge of my position in the deafening silence following the firing of the M-60. I sometimes found myself transfixed during the lull, the air heavy with the pungent smell of gunpowder and cordite, surrounded by our deadly debris, mesmerized by the haunting, abstract beauty of the battlefield, yet unable to reconcile that visoin with what I had really done. What had I done? How much was a dream, ho." Samuelson, Pencil on paper, 1980. "Came into Da Nang and flight was delayed in landing because of rocket attacks, finally landed, stayed the night. Following day took off for An Hoa, nineteen miles southwest, spent two days in the rear filling sandbags, standing watch at night, put up barbed wire, filll more sandbags, stood watch at night, fell into the red mud, got in a fire fight with a rat who stole my apple and baloney sandwich, next day move out to Liberty Bridge with small patrol. It took about a day and a half to get there because the point men kept tripping wires and setting off booby traps; finally got to the bridge and joined my wonderful squad."
