Description: A naval officer assigned to the U.S. Navy Los Angeles class attack submarine USS La Jolla (SSN 701), explains the capabilities of the deep submergence rescue vehicle Mystic (DSRV-1), to naval officers from the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. La Jolla and Mystic will operate with surface ships and submarines from the U.S., Japan, Australia, the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Singapore during Exercise Pacific Reach. Mystic was specifically designed to fill the need for an improved means of rescuing the crew of a submarine immobilized on the ocean floor. Description: The 40 ton Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) Angler Fish 2, is lowered through the middle of the JMSDF submarine rescue ship, JDS Chihaya. The DSRV will deploy 50 meters below and mate with a simulated disabled Republic of Korea Navy submarine on the ocean floor, during events supporting exercise Pacific Reach 2002. Pacific Reach is an exercise hosted by the JMSDF designed to improve submarine rescue capabilities. Description: A U. S. Coast Guard HH-65 ?Dolphin? helicopter conducts a dramatic joint rescue of a stranded kayaker found adrift and taking on water, approximately 100 miles off the coast of Hawaii. A U.S. Navy P-3C ?Orion? maritime patrol and antisubmarine warfare plane assigned to the "Golden Eagles" of Patrol Squadron Nine (VP-9), spotted the kayaker who had braved 10 - 15 foot waves for four days.
