Fallen Timbers/Fallen Tim
David A. Given, Color photograph by David Given, machine-stitched with fabric netting, colored threads, acetate transparencies, and metallic fringe by Arturo Alonzo Sandoval, 1989. "Fallen Timbers is an attempt to express the beauty and the loss on both sides of the [Vietnam Memorial] Wall. A tree that falls is still a tree, no matter on which side of the wall it falls. To the best of my knowledge, I am the only tree from my combat company left standing in Columbus, Ohio. Six others fell."

Silhouettes of Soul
William Smith, Collage, cotton fabric, and photographs, 1996. "The art work is three American flags: one large, representing the whole United States, all of America, white, black, what have you; the second is the flag of the Vietnam veteran--a flag for all who served there; the third is the Afro-American flag, and represents the brothers who served there. The photograph in the center is of my comrades. I think we were on ambush at the time. These are the guys I would give my life to."
