Members of the flight deck crew inspect the arresting gear aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) before flight operations. The arresting gear is four sturdy cables made of tightly woven high-tensile steel wire, 20 feet from one another at the aft end of the flight deck. These arresting "wires" are snagged by tailhook on an aircraft, making possible the ability to land and come to a full stop within a few hundred feet.
