MH-53J Pave Low IIIE
Function: Low-level, long-range, all weather Combat Search and Rescue, Special Operations Support, and heavy equipment transport.
Description: The MH-53J Pave Low IIIE heavy-lift helicopter is the largest, most technologically advanced, and most powerful helicopter in the Airforce. Based on the basic Vietnam era HH-53 Super Jolly Green Giant airframe, the Pave Low IIIE has been optimized for low level insertions and extractions, self defense, enemy small arms fire suppression, and bulk cargo and troop transport. The 53J's terrain-following and terrain-avoidance radar, forward-looking infrared sensor, inertial navigation system with global positioning system, along with a projected map display enable the crew to follow terrain contours and avoid obstacles, making low-level penetration possible. Additionally, the MH-53J is equipped with a aerial refueling probe and is capable of lifting 20,000 pounds of cargo using its external cargo hook.

A 58th Special Operations
A 58th Special Operations Wing, 551st Special Operations Squadron, MH-53J Pave Low IIIE flies a training mission near Kirtland Air Force Base, NM. The MH-53J's mission is to perform low-level, long-range, undetected penetration into denied areas, day or night, in adverse weather, for infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces. The MH-53J Pave Low III heavy-lift helicopter is the largest and most powerful helicopter in the Air Force inventory, and the most technologically advanced helicopter in the world. Its terrain-following, terrain-avoidance radar and forward-looking infrared sensor, along with a projected map display, enable the crew to follow terrain contours and avoid obstacles, making low-level penetration possible. The 58th SOW offers more than 90 courses for special operations and combat search and rescue troops at Kirtland. Courses include transition and instruments, aerial refueling, airdrops, helicopter hoist and combat tactics training. The wing trains some 1,600 students each year in HH-60 Pave Hawk, UH-1N Huey, TH-53A and MH-53J Pave Low IIIE helicopters, and MC-130 Combat Talon and MC-130P Combat Shadow aircraft.

The 20th Special Operatio
The 20th Special Operations Squadron, located at Hurlburt Field, Fla., is one of eight flying squadrons within the 16th Special Operations Wing. Known as the "Green Hornets," the 20th SOS flies the MH-53J Pave Low IIIE, the Air Force's most sophisticated helicopter. The primary mission of the 20th SOS is to conduct day or night low level penetration into hostile enemy territory, to accomplish clandestine infiltration and exfiltration, aerial gunnery support and resupply of special operations forces throughout the world. These operations involve tactical low-level navigation, night vision goggle operations, airland and airdrop techniques and over-water operations. The unique capabilities of the MH-53J Pave Low allow the 20th to operate from unprepared landing zones in any type of terrain and from otherwise inaccessible areas.
