Flight deck personnel attach a cargo hook to a French-built Eurocopter SA 330 Puma helicopter during an underway vertical replenishment with a Navy supply ship. As a cost-savings measure, the Navy's Military Sealift Command contracts the services of the Pumas. Carriers, such as George Washington, allow the United States to bring air power where it's needed, when it's needed and for as long as it's needed without requiring any basing permission from another country. George Washington is homeported in Norfolk, Va., and is nearing the end of a scheduled six month deployment after completing combat missions in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Southern Watch.
