The guided missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) underway prior to conducting an underway replenishment with the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). U.S. Navy guided missile cruisers perform primarily in a Battle Force role. These ships are multi-mission surface combatants capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces, or of operating independently and as flagships of surface action groups. Due to their extensive combat capability, these ships have been designated as Battle Force Capable (BFC) units. The cruisers are equipped with ?Tomahawk? cruise missiles for long range strike mission capability. Normandy is homeported in Norfolk Va. and is on a scheduled six-month deployment with the USS George Washington battle group in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
