The World Trade Center excavation site in lower Manhattan took on special meaning July 4 for "Battle Force" troopers from the 3rd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell, Ky. More than 350 soldiers from the battalion were guests of the New York/New Jersey Port Authority Police at "Ground Zero" on the nation's 226th anniversary. Of those, 23 soldiers from the 327th took their oath of reenlistment at the site of the September 11 terrorist attack on New York City as the rest of the regiment reaffirmed its commitment to fight and win America's war on terrorism. As part of the ceremony, battalion commander Lt. Col. Edmund Palekas presented the Port Authority Police a regimental flag and received in return a U.S. flag that had been flown over the site.
