A salvo of stubby-winged Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from four U.S. warships and two submarines marked the start of the assault against Iraq on March 20, 2003. It wasn't the huge bombardment that many military analysts had predicted, but the sight of the missiles thundering into the night sky toward Baghdad still shocked and awed the crews of the vast naval flotilla gathered in the Gulf.
